Pat Baysinger
Is that the dumbest question or what? Oh well, I never claimed to be a mechanic, so I have to ask questions. One more...what's a long block compared to a short block? Thanks.
Dave@Moon
"Big" and "small" blocks are relative terms. I've on occasion seen MGB 4 cylinder motors referred to as "big blocks", as they in fact are relative to the BMC A-series engine in the rest of the concurrent MG line. Basically if there are two families of like engine types (i.e. V8, straight 6, etc.) marketed at the same time by a given manufacturer, the larger of the two will usually be called a big block."Long" and "short" blocks are terms for replacement engines. A "short block" is an engine block with it's contents (pistons, crank, and [if present] oil pump, camshaft, lifters, etc.) installed. A "long block" has the various attached componentry installed as well, such as heads, distributor, etc. Exact differences between the two terms may vary by car brand and the engine rebuilder.
