Great American Race "Pin" (?)

I remember the Great American Race coming through my hometown in the 80s. It's sort of a cross-country road show of classic cars, if I remember correctly. They change the route often (if they still do it these days).

I never knew Buick (much less the Reatta) had anything to do with it. Must have been too young to care, I guess.

Nic,

I purchased one of these earlier in the year. It is dime-sized, great detail, and authentic for the Great American Race.

If this one stays around the price now showing, it's a steal. Don't remember what I paid, but it was a lot higher....

AFAIR the "Great American Race" was more of a rally for vintage cars than anything else - there was a fudge factor applied to scores that benefited the older (and supposidly less reliable) ones.

My thought was toward something like a 1953 Studillac.

Apparently since 2001 it has been "The Great Race", do not know why "American" was dropped, maybe because The Bentley Boys kept winning.

Buick helped sponsor the race for several years. The Reatta convertible was used in the summer of 1989 for the race. This was several months before the convertible was available to the public. From our database, the production convertible did not show-up until November of 1989, and them not in great numbers.

I suspect the demand for convertibles in the winter was less than coupes so the serious build of 1990 convertibles did not start until Febuary 1990

Uh dang it, you're the one that got that GAR pin at the swap meet!!! AARRGGHH

I heard about it, went down Sat to get it and it was gone....... Had others with batteries, etc but couldn't find the one with the Reatta....

But I did manage to get the 90 years of Buick large poster, one for $20.00 and one for $2.00. You think the latter was a steal or the former is where I got rooked?? Oh well, live and learn.

Now to find that darn electrical problem with fuse # 2, that Barney said I could trace back in Chapter 8 to a whatcha ma call it (Relay B?).... that Art said I could swap the whatcha ma call its to see if one is out,......... or find one heck of a Buick Electrical Service Shop........ NOT in SW MO.

Ok so back tp page 8A-114-2 which refers me to the fuse box on page............

Oh well, You gotta luv em, right? <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Reatta convertibles were used as pace cars in the 1990 Great Race which ended at Disneyland.  My white convertible is one that was used.  It had 4453 miles when it was delivered to the first purchaser at Steffy Buick in Anaheim.

This could be an interesting piece of Reatta history.   The 1990 race started in Harrison NY and ended at Disneyland the dates were June 26 - July 7 .....it would be nice to have the vin of the car for Reatta records.

What I would like to find is the white/red convertible used in 1989.  It would need to be an early pre-production vehicle,.  The early 1990 convertibles were a batch made from 900012 thru 900028 but none were white/red, the first white/red convertible I can find is 900233 and the build date looks like it would be in August....too late for the 1989 race

Anyone know the particulars about this pin which is listed on EBay #3621701966? Picture shows "Interstate Batteries Great American Race". Nicely appointed pin in blow up picture with Reatta convertible......

Here is a must newer listing for a 1989 Great American Race pin on Ebay:
