my regal v8 is [censored]!!

the alternator is a 60 amp- is this the stock size for a regal limited 79´ v8 301 ?? or do i have to get a bigger one?

both the bat. and alt. are new and seem to be ok. but I still have problems - like when i use the heater og wipers and so the ammeter shows discharge and then when i stop using them it charges a little but not enough...

what is wrong - bigger alt? <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Guest Stllrng.

I had a similar problem with a Monte Carlo that I once owned. I had the alternator off twice and couldn't find anything wrong. Then I tightened the belt much tighter than I normally would. End of problems. If the head lights are bright at an idle, and then dim as you rev up the engine, the belt is too loose.

OK Back up.

What is the problem? I read your post and could not tell if the problem is that despite the new alternator and battery - it is still discharging so much that when you go to start it the next days, the output amperage and voltage is low? Or are you just concerned that the ammeter is showing such a large discharge?

If the concern is no 1 - and you can isolate the "loads" that cause the dischareg then you will want to check those electrically for a high draw.

For starters, you'll probably need a wiring diagram but you make a visual inspection in the circuit sof concern. Look for frayed wires, loose grounds, etc. Check resistance (ohms) into the load, then, hopefully you can check after the loads (wiper motor) Make sure your fuses are OK. But ultimately you have to wonder if you can get a higher amperage alternator if all these other areas check out OK. Make sure that you are getting a top-of-the line alternator. Cheap ones are usually merely painted and inspected!

Is the connection at the alternator snug or loose?

Is the connection at the battery tight?

Are all of your ground points clean, free of rust, and well connected?

I do not have the specification for a 79 Regal but typically "modern" cars will use a 65 to 85 amp output alternator. Under noraml circumstances, the alternator will never need it's maximum. Also check alternator voltage output (true) and v output through the battery.

everything seems to be okay. output from alt and ohm-resistance in wires, fuses and so on..

when i fully charge the bat. and put it in the car there is nothing wrong - and the amp/bat.light goes out. then when driving around and using wipers, heater and so the amp.needle starts dropping and amp.light goes on - then when stoppin using things it charges a little but never enough. after using the wipers and so for 4-5 days the bat. is drained...
