help with cooling the V12

I drove my lincoln about 50 miles today in 100+ heat in the usual bumper to bumper traffic and the car got hot enough to cause vapor lock even with the electric pump turned on. the engine never spit up any water and even after vapor locking was cool enough to take the radiator cap off. I am getting ready to put on my 2x2 intake which should distrbute the fuel better thus making it runn a little cooler on those outboard cylinders. the engine also kept 20 lbs oil pressure at idle in this heat. 50 running. anyone have any ideas on stopping the vapor lock and maybe cooling the engine a little more than 210 in this heat. I am getting a 6 volt electric fan tomarrow and a fan shroud is being made. thinking of a fuel return line to keep the fuel circulating. has anyone used the new head gasket and if so what result did you get?

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Thanks dale. I might have to give that a try. I just had both pumps rebuilt so I hope the fan shroud and an electric fan will help, also taking off the steel fuel lines from the pump to the carbs and replacing them with rubber, if all else fails I will tap into the fuel block and make a return line back to the tank or install one of the fuel coolers they use on the race cars.

Dear Pandamarie,For starters how about using a wetting agent, ie Purple Ice is one.Available at any performance store or speed shop, suppose to lower operating temp 30 degrees.Sounds like an EASY fix,and you know what they say about those.diz

As with any engine, be it a V-12 or a Model "T" They will overheat if the timing is off. Remember that if the Spark timing is connected to the camtiming as it is on an L-Z and the cam timing is off then so is the spark timing. I did this one time on a Corvair and the results were remarkable. It is so easy to do on some engines that one tries to find every thing else instead of timing.

Also as stated air in the coolant system is a killer. Does it have a crack between the valve seats. Do you have a pressure cap on it and us a glass jar (Be careful) to see if it has bubbles coming out of the radiator. Yours, M.L. Thanks Leslie. I already pressure checked the engine and radiator, also know the timing marks on the cam and crank are dead on. no problems there. I will let you know what I find out when I get it back up and running, just put on the 2x2 intake and need to make linkage that will work.

Diz, am interested in how things worked out on your water pumps sent to Skip in Florida for refurb. Also could you supply his number since being in Florida myself, I may need all the help I can get keeping the V-12 cool when I get it running.

Thank You, Dave Hugo
