Paint Chips for 1927 Durant Star

Hello All:

I'm new to this forum, having been referred by a member of the Durant Motors Automobile Club. I'm wondering if anyone out there would have advice or contacts who could help me source out some original paint chip samples for my 1927 Durant Star 4 "Sport" Touring. This car has been in the family since 1934 when my father purchased the car as his first vehicle, here in Ontario, Canada. The original car had "triple-tone" paint colours: dark blue; light aqua blue; and black mud guards. I've got several original brochures on the Star with coloured photos, but they are apparently not accurate to original colours. Would appreciate any advice or leads you could provide.

Thanks in advance.

If you have paint code information from the original literature, you might be able to see what the colors look like at:

They do have a section where you can look up pretty much any Ditzler IM code and see a color chip. Mind you that color chips may have suffered color shift over the years before being scanned. The scanner they used may not have been perfect. And you are viewing on a uncalibrated monitor that uses additive colors rather than subtractive colors. In other words, your mileage may vary.

What I did on my car is get small (1 pint or 1 quart) samples of each color I thought I might like from a mail order antique car paint specialist. I then painted a relatively large piece of scrap sheet metal with each color to see what it would look like on a larger area to decide what colors I really wanted.

The other advantage to this method is your test piece is then large enough to take to your local automotive paint supply store and have them run it by their computer match system to match the color with stuff you can get locally. (I much prefer to deal with local stores than with Internet or mail order outfits.)

Might also check with Hibernia Restoration as they have a lot of the old color formulas. Even for orphans like the Jordan. They have given me good service over the years and their colors seem to be consistent. I think they have a web site, but the advertise in most of the old car publications
