YEAH! A public forum for Chandler/Cleveland specific questions. I'm sure that I'll still be conversing with the same C/C owners that I do off the DF, but now maybe we can all learn. I'm also looking foward to meeting Chandler/Cleveland owners who might be new to the Chandler/Cleveland Club.

Just happened on your site. I am a 84 year old son of a former Chandler-Cleveland Dealer from Pittsburgh,Pa. Was given an assignment from a granddaughter in Harrisburg,Pa. to give her a history of our family dealership.My dad started in 1923selling Chandler and Cleveland.Still remember learning how to drive in our driveway with the traffic transmission and recall the old "pikes peak engine" Just thought I would do some remininiscing about a great car. My Dad sold 15 Red Chandler Coupes to the City of Pgh. in 1925.They were used by all the Battalion Fire Chiefs Ed Sable

Looks like a good place to tell my Chandler story.

My dad was from Naw-fuk, Vah-gin-yah.. the youngest (1914) of 12 children.

He was devil-may-care in his younger days & wound up farmed out to the elders over the years.

He came out to visit me in 1976 in Reno & I treated him to Harrah's Collection.

We wandered through all the old icehouses, past 1000 cars... Packards in rainbow colors, Duesenburgs in their sleak majesty, the Type 41 Royale Bugatti, coffin-nosed Cords, yellow Bearcats.... Nothing caught his attention... He paused by a '32 Chrysler & said "Your Uncle saul had one of these w/ water injection in Richmond. Then he spotted something in the back of a row... and dashed over to it!! "That's a 1922 Chandler!!" He beamed... "The first car I ever stole to go to Virginia Beach was a '22 Chandler!"

I am also new to the forum. I just got my grandfathers 1922 Royal Dispatch. The story behind it is that my grandfather sold it in Wauchula Florida in 1922 (the year he was married). He bought it back in the 1950's and restored it. The car was featured in the 1963 Antique Automobile magazine Vol 27, #3.

It has been sitting awhile and I need some help. This is what I posted in oil thread.

LOOKING FOR A STARTER. Bosch 901

I am the new owner of my grandfathers 1922 Royal Dispatch. I look forward to many years with this wonderful car. However, I need a starter and some tips on preparing the car for starting (it has been idle for 10 or more years). I plan on putting some good quality synthetic oil in the cylinders and slowly turning the crank (a little bit) each day until I am sure the engine and rings are losened (if they are even stuck?).

Any other suggestion other than the standard flushing the gas tank and lines, radiator etc.

The car is in very good condition and even has the original leather on the seatbacks.

Any info on where to find the starter? It is a Bosch # 901.

My Chandler has sat for the past 40 years with no confirmed knowledge of why it has sat or if the engine would even turn. My trick was to pour ATF down the sparkplug holes and let it sit for about a week. Watch out for ATF coming out of the updraft carb. though! I had it running out on the garage floor. It is a lot cheaper than synthetic oil and has better cleaning additives. It all drains into the oil pan that you will need to remove and clean anyway. After letting it sit try the crank, slowly.

A radiator shop can clean and flush the radiator and gas tank. Make sure you choose one that understands our 0 psi systems!!!! I have a good shop near me. After the car has sat for so long you sure don't want to ruin it now. After the radiator is throughly cleaned put a Gano filter on there to trap the debri comming out of the engine. When you price the honeycomb radiators you'll understand why this is important! If you can't find a shop near you let me know. I'm sure we can get the parts to the shop here to get fixed right.

On the starter, I don't have any "magic parts source", wish I did! I'll check our club newsletter for any listed. When (if) you join our Chandler-Cleveland club you can place an ad in our club newsletter. You can even get in tough with others with similar cars.

My mother who is 85 years young still remembers going for Sunday rides although she can't remember the exact year of the machine. She said it had ample room for the entire family. Some thing about a bench seat that flipped down to face the back seat. The seven children and two adults would tour German village in Columbus to see relatives back in the late 20's.

I also am from Pittsburgh and my granfather owned a Chandler purchased new (probably from your father). My dad, who would be 89 if he were still alive, spoke very highly of the car. My grandfather was pretty well to do and this was his favorite car. My dad told me how he took the car to his high school prom at the William Penn, parked it outside and the car was stolen.

He naturally was afraid to go home. He told my grandmother who responded...."throw roses on the garage....the Chandler was stolen". The car was later recovered in fine shape. My dad said they thought someone was using it to "run Liquor".

HI-I'M BILL-I LIVE OUTSIDE THE PHILA PA AREA-I WAS RECENTLY APPROACHED ABOUT BUYIN A NEW CAR TO RESTORE -TURNS OUT ITS A 1928 CHANDLER 4DR TOURING (OR CONVERTIBLE)-I THINK ITS A 6 CYL I'M NOT SURE-I'D LIKE TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT IT-IT NEEDS EVERYTHING REDONE HOWEVER IT SEEMS TO BE ALL THERE-IS THERE ANY PRE-HISTORIC SALVAGE YARDS THAT MIGHT HAVE THESE IN THEM OR IS THERE ANY PLACE WHERE I CAN GET PARTS (USED/AFTERMARKET/ANYTHING) FOR IT-I KNOW ABOUT CARLILSE AND HERSHEY AND WILL PAY THEM BOTH A VISIT-I ALSO LIKE TO GET SOME INFO ABOUT THAT CHANDLER CLUB /NEWSLETTER-THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS-BILL

Hi,

I'm currently restoring a 1928 Chandler. I purchased it in Canada about 2 years ago. I have been looking for bulletin board. So first , Thank you for maintaining this board.

I need some advice on how to remove the steering wheel with out damaging it.

I'm looking for parts. A door handle, rear trim and a few others.

Also, I need some pictures of how the finishing work was done on the interior of the roof.

Any help will be appreciated. I have pix of the car available.

Hi,

My name is Chris. I am the editor of the Chandler/Cleveland newsletter. Our little newsletter has two pages of classified ads that might help you. It comes out three times a year about 6 pages each time.

A 1928 touring model sounds very nice. There were two six's available a Big six and a small six. Each had motors and transmissions made by Chandler. Most parts are Chandler specific for these cars. This can make it very difficult to find parts as they rarely turn up at your local swapmeet. I was at Hershey this year and found a few parts for my 1929 sedan.

If you are looking for a solid rare car that you will not see many of the Chandler is a nice choice. I am compiling a database of all the known Chandler and Cleveland cars known to exist. We have about 200 cars and less than 100 club members.

E-mail me with the serial number of your car and I can tell you more about it.

Hi Chris and all,

I'm looking for the following parts for a 1928 Chandler Sedan 31A

1. Rear door handle

2. Oiling system part. It appears to be the main splitter junction connection in the front. The line runs from the manual oil pump inside the car to this junction. Then there are pipes that run from this junction to each oiling joint. It is pot metal and mine has 3 of the fittings damaged.

3. Rear universal joint. ??

I have the car almost totally disassembled now and will soon be starting the rebuilding.

Both of mine (front and rear) have broken fittings but the entire assembly including values and springs are there. It appears it is a junction box with check values to keep oil from flowing back up into the pump.

Any idea who can make a reproduction? I've been thinking about using brass 4 ways and independent check values If I can find them

Hello,

I have just acquired a 1926 Chandler Rumble Seat Roadster. It was restored many years ago.

I would like to find front brake hardware, it now has just rear wheel brakes.

Also, I was told that I should change the rear axel ratio for normal driving. It has hill climbing gears in it.

Any help or additional info would be greatly appreciated!!

We are looking at a 1928 Chandler tomorrow. It has been stored in a shop here in Alaska for several years and was running when it was parked. We need some information on what the value range would be. Anyone have any info? Thanks.

What condition is the car in and what model is it? Pictures would help too. We got our 1929 Chandler a few years back for about $4k. It is very complete and will be back on the road in the future. If the car you are looking at is complete or close to complete it can become a great car to drive and enjoy. Send me the chassis serial number and I can tell you more about what you are looking at.

Hello Chris, are you aware of the chandlers here in Canada? My name is Jim and there is one for sale in ontario, a 1929, the body is a style of a woodie delivery, do you know if such a body style was offered by chandler. The owner has advised me that this is not the body style that came off the line for this car.

Also, how hard is it to find parts for a 1929 chandler?

Hi Jim,

No Chandler did not produce such a body to the best of my knowledge. 1929 was the last year for this make as Hupp bought them in 1928 it seems mostly for their big factory so they could increase production of their own make and knock off some of their competition.

Parts are hard to come by for a Chandler of any vintage as Chandler made a lot of their own parts including drivetrains.

Would love to see pictures of the car and more info about it including the serial number to confirm its year of manufacture. As far as finding parts you might try posting wanted ads on this forum and if you have not done so join the Chandler-Cleveland Car Club, dues are very reasonable and Roger puts out a great newsletter.

Hi Chris,

The serial number is 47455. It seems this car was originally a "normal" 1929 model 65. Apparently, unable to obtain parts, the previous owner worked on the assumption that Chandler also sold some vehicles for light commercial use, in a bare cab/chassis form. The buyer would apparently make their own wooden box to mount on the vehicle. I've seen the tern "Huckster," used by other car manufacturers for this type of vehicle in that time period. Would you know of any photos or other evidence of Chandler doing this? Anyway what you see in the photo below is the owner's effort to create a typical custom box on a Chandler.

The serial number is correct for a 1929 model 65. From that angle the model 65 details look correct, like the hubcaps, lights and front bodywork. This one looks nicely done, but I doubt that it was done by the factory. At this point Huppmobile was putting Chandler cars togther from the parts they had on hand to complete the run. I suppose it is possible that it came from the factory, but I have never seen reference to the factory producing a "Huckster". Would be a neat driver on tours or around town. Thanks for sharing.

Hi name is Neil I am the owner of a 1923 cleveland 2 dr all original vehicle which I drive every year in Cleveland Ohio. My father owned a local filling station here in the 40s and 50s. He aquired the car from a customer who borrowed money and used the car as collateral and never returned. I aquired the car after the passing of my father in the 70s and have been caring for it ever since. I will be joining the CC club soon.
