Wheel Bearings

Wow! I went to my local bearing shop today to purchase front wheel brgs for my '20 DB Touring. Even the counter person nearly dropped his teeth when he looked up the price! $600 for just the inner race and bearing cage for the larger bearing! Where do others buy bearings? Is there anything that's interchangeable? I don't see them in the Romar catalog either.

I had the same sticker shock a few years ago when I inquired about a replacement with one of the retail bearing specialists. I believe there is a reasonably priced substitute for the early four DBs listed somewhere in the older DB Club magazines. Will try to look it up this weekend.

In the fall of 2002 Timken dropped a whole slew of bearings from their catalog and the prices went up immediately on those still in stock. Unfortunately, from the list I saw from Timken, this includes most all the 4-cylinder DB wheel bearings. I just priced the front outer wheel bearing cones for a 1923 and also had sticker shock. They make a somewhat narrower unit still in teh catalog with same OD and ID. Problem of course is to determine whether they will take the weight or not. We have a member who is a Timken engineer who is looking into this all right now. In the mean time, try Ol-Car Bearings Comapny, listed in our latest Directory of Vendors or as leadfoot suggests, serach the backissue CD-ROMs for "bearings" and see what you get. I fear not much because until very recently these were all in production and so no one needed to worry about substituting.
