Relay question...

The three relays on the firewall slip up onto a metal tab. Does anyone know of a specific brand of relay that is designed to do the same and is an exact match? I bought a relay (forget which brand at the moment), but the case does not match to slip snuggly into place.

Neither Advance, Auto Zone, NAPA, or Buick offer a replacement that is the same. I was going to relace mine just because and I got tired of looking for an exact fit. EDSO might have some updated info.... I am going to take the Advance relays and just neatly mount to the firewall (same location) with small self tapping screws.

I went thru that when I replaced mine. On line Gm ordering was no less then confusing buying with or without brackets -I suppose as they revised the part itself. If I remember Barney had some answers on the GM part #'s that were an exact match. Perhaps a search would bring up the correct #'s. I at the time just went to the local Buick dealer and got the right parts but paid twice what the so called replacement cost at the local auto-zone store.

The only (probably superceded) relay the Buick people now have will not seal properly with the wiring harness/gang plug - I don't think the slide mount works anymore either-this is why I gave up. Somebody please prove me wrong - I really would like to make it origional - I broke the slide mounts on the origional relays messing around with them (there was nothing wrong with them to begin with) trying to find exact replacements .

Searched the sight (what I should have done to begin with) and found a reply from Barney back on 11/12/1999 w/subject of Re: Brake relays. The answer was as follows:

The relays that I was getting from AutoZone are made by Hella and have part number 25530731 molded into the top. The other possible solution is to form the tab back into the bracket slightly. On virgin relays, you need to pull them out then down to remove them....the plastic tab on the relay locks into the square hole in the bracket. If the little tab gets formed out too far, they may slip out.

There is one other relay out there with the name Omron..(25553347) that has two molded slots in the back...the outer most slot is about 3/4 wide and the slot behind that one is 5/8 wide. You need the 5/8 slot, so you need to cut the outer platic away to use the inner slot.

Hope this helps

Well at least my question wasnt totally for not. Even if I may have answered my own question, I hope I helped others who had the same question.

Below from reatta.net Brakes Parts

The MR116 is a perfect fit, $8, from Advance Auto however may be discontinued. It was replaced w/ MR 125, I think, then MR125 was replaced. Find a friendly salesperson to research.

Note: Some may need slight modifications or have incorrect mounting tabs

I have been able to remove the working portion of the relay and install it in the old case.

This way you keep the old correct mounting points and get fresh inner workings.

You may be able to clean and polish the old contact points and restore functionality.

Hi Nic;

Happy Chinese New Year to you! and all.

I have been having a great busy time with friends and family traveling, playing and enjoying myself.

With the very, very fast onset of winter I haven't even been able to start any of the Reatta winter projects. Suppose that if I haven't started yet they won't get done this winter. Too cold! There is always another day.

In winter I don't check into the forum nearly as much as I used to. Want to see a [color:"blue"] -27 degree Fahrenheit forecast BRRRRRRRRRR

Additionally I have been offended by all that anonymous posting crap and cat eating garbage that continues even today. I have too much respect for cats and life not to be offended. As a self policing forum, it would appear that I am the only one offended or perhaps just the vocal minority willing to object publicly. pussies.gif

Some major improvements here recently, Thanks Peter.

Here they are - very nice for only 10k byte jpg.

Barney says the two on the left fit but the one on the right doesn't

BTW we have three cats one of which was cunningly designed by the ancient egyptians so his mouth can reach the bottom of a #10 can.

The empty box that contained the Advance Auto MR116 Relay also has Sorensen and Sku # 18970090 ( A.A. #)(the relay was in a car I sold). Some stores may still have!

The parts distributor for Ad. Auto and others can find no trace of a MR116. I am in the process of trying to get an Ad. Auto store to research. They have a different data base than the distributor.

I happen to be very attached to our two cats also, in fact in the past I raised Persians. There were times I would gladly have served up one for dinner. I don't believe the remarks about cats here are serious so I don't take offense.

As someone else likes to say, don't believe the hype.

Thank to Padgett for posting the relay pictures.

Note the latching tab on the relays. The center and left will latch with factory connector but the right will not (that's the one GM sold me)

Sorenson brand is made by Standard Electric (Blue Streak) so they can be the same part in different boxes.

Hella part numbers 25530905,25530905, and 25530731 work

Bosch #12065115 works.

Omron #25553347 works.

There may be others.

I no longer have a car with the Teves nor an old Relay for comparison but Advance Auto sells a relay made by Factory Air, 35774 on box, part # on Relay 2642. It has a tab(wicket shaped) that appears to be the same as the ones that fit/lock. It also has a metal removable tab w/ a bolt hole. Perhaps someone needing a relay could try one and report if it fits?

If you still need the relays let me know, I have several from bone yard finds and have them boxed up in my spare parts. I allways grab relays, electrluminicent converters and small items I can get. You never no when you need them.

Okay... I'll bite... what is an "electrluminicent converter" (sounds like a fancy name for a bulb)

The three relays on the firewall slip up onto a metal tab. Does anyone know of a specific brand of relay that is designed to do the same and is an exact match? I bought a relay (forget which brand at the moment), but the case does not match to slip snuggly into place.

Quick question - was cleaning the engine compartment on my newly acquired 90 coupe and noticed that there are only 2 relays in the location where it appears there should be three. I see the tab where the third one should be. However, I do not see any connector present that would be attached to the "missing" relay.

Were changes made to the 90 model that eliminated the third relay - which in my case is the one on the far left that is not there.

I would think that there would be serious issues if it was needed and was missing.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response! I am finally getting back into auto restoration and am extremely happy about it. I am glad that I found this fine community and will do my best to contribute with useful information if possible. I just downloaded the 1990 FSM which should provide me with many hours of pleasurable reading. My coupe is a 90 with 63000 miles, never seen salt and garaged its entire life. The color is what I believe to be Gunmetal Gray.

Thanks again

The 90 has only two relays but still has the tab connector for a third. Was probably cheaper to use older style than to manufacture new one with only two tabs.

By the way, the U-Pick lots are full of these relays on many GM cars.

post-30596-143139133201_thumb.jpgBeen a while since that post started....... the '88 and '89 Reattas had 3 relays on the firewall, some late '89's may have only 2, like all 1990 and '91's. The relay on the end (passanger side) was for the fuel pump.

Attached are two photos..... the picture with 3 relays shows the side with the connector latch, note the far right relay has a small latch and it will not latch to the connector. The other picture shows the slot on the back that attaches to the metal tab on the firewall,

I found this post very helpful as I needed to replace a bad brake pump relay on my 1990 Reatta. I discovered what others noted that the Buick replacement relay was not an exact fit, and did not interlock. From relay numbers listed in this post, NAPA was able to cross reference to their Echlin AR174 ABS Relay, and it is an exact match with the original, for $13.36.

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/ABS-Relay/_/R-ECHAR174_0460182791

The left relay position under the hood is intended to be empty in the 1990 Reatta. The middle position is the Brake Pump Relay, and the right is the ABS Main Relay. The fuel pump relay on the 1990 Reatta is located in position "C" in the passenger side fuse panel relay block.
