Good point, Wayne...

My approach to an Anonymous:

1. May be a new person. Show them respect and "Welcome", depending on the context of their post.

2. To the "Usual" Anonymous folks...No different than hearing your phone ring, pick it up, they speak, don't identify themselves, I hang up. (Tele-Marketer syndrom.)

3. Want to be a Steady Anonymous? Good for you. Your option. However, how do you expect to receive any respectful, informative, sincere response from people that identify themselves to you? Again, there are a lot of very knowledgeable/experienced folks on this forum that go out of their way to research the answer to your query/post. Do not know how the rest of you folks feel, but, I do not have much energy to help someone that does not reciprocate by simply identifying themself.

Comes down to basic manners.

Regards, Peter J.

Very well stated, Peter! I follow your theory but offer my refinements. In the "General" or "Tech" sections, if the Anon is an obvious rookie I'll offer what advice I can and encourage him (her) to register. Otherwise, I ignore their remarks and questions. I feel that an Anon has no place in the "For Sale Wanted" section. Why would ANYONE consider doing business with an Anon? The same goes for the "Editors" section. Any editor should be proud of his/her publication and not hide his/her identity. Finally, any topic that I feel important to me will be posted in the "R&R" section where the Anons can't post.

For those of you Anons who don't register because of being paranoid of Big Brother, please understand that you don't have to be the FBI to track you down. The technology is out there and available to anyone interested in pursuing it. Since I changed my IP over 6 months ago, the only sites I visit regularly are this one, eBay, NASCAR and the Google search engine. To this date, I have not received any spam in my email box so I know that these sites are not passing out my email address. If that is your fear for not registering, think up another excuse!

If you only spoke and dealt with people you already knew, who would you have ever met in the first place? confused.gifhuh.gif

fordee9r, I don't understand your tone. Someone placed an ad on this site and was not a registered "member". It was a good deal, I'd have been a fool not to buy it, emailed or phoned him (can't remember), once I got directions I drove to his home and paid for the item put in my van and drove home. What is so hard to follow on this?

Bob, I've had many similar experiences, you're interested in something, you touch base with'em, agree on a price and <bingo>it's yours.

Old Austie used to say the true value of an item is the price the buyer and seller are happy with despite so-called "price guides" and the proliferation of printed matter that attempts to set a fixed price on something.

Very seldom will you ever see one's name listed in the classified section of a local newspaper. Ads typically only describe the item for sale, what they are asking for it, and a phone number. I see little difference here. They give enough information for you to contact them. Once in contact, you make the deal. If you're not comfortable with the person, don't make the deal.

ronbarn...

Ron, I noticed something here that I will address to PeterG.

I had sent e-mails to you and Ron Springstead and they, too, were returned.

When I deleted "remove me first" from the your addresses, the mail went through.

Where I am confused, and, hopefully, PeterG can clarify the issue, is, I use AOL and the "remove me first" text is not there. It is on both of yours, and, others who utilize services other than AOL.

Regards, Peter J.

fordee9er,

I don't think the sun has anything to do with it, except it makes your mood better & the vitamin C you get from the orangetree in the back gets you through the harsh Florida winter. It was on a Tuesday this year grin.gif As far as my responce to you, we where talking about the profile, WHERE YOU HAVE NO NAME, and yes, I can read your signature.

Sorry Swede,

I thought that when I first registered on this forum that my name, email address, mailing address, etc. were all public records. I don't know what happened when the forum changed but I apologize for any inconveniences that this change has created. At the same time, I must surrender and agree with you that it makes perfect sence to do business with and exchange money for goods and/or services with anonymous/unregistered users. What the heck, who cares if there is a way to track the buyer or seller down?

fordee9er,

I fail to see your point. What is the difference in buying something from you, or an anonymous?

Does the info in your profile,

Name: fordee9er

Title: Member

Occupation: Auto Mechanic

Location: Sharon Springs, NY

make me run to the bank & send you my money without even talking to you? If an anonymous post something for sale here I would of course do the same thing, contact either by e-mail or phone (provided by the anon) and then finalize the deal.

I must be a real dumb Swede buying stuff from people I have not known all my life tongue.gif Come to think of it, when I go to the grocery store I don't even know the person behind the counter but I still buy from them, of course they have a signature (nametag) so maybe that makes it ok grin.gifgrin.gif

What are u talking about????????? the change has ALREADY been made so that ONLY registered screen names can post!!!! To top it off, apparently the 'vote' was initiated with NO EXPIRATION DATE meaning that the vote ran until it went the way of the Registering proponents.

DOESN'T all of this tell you something?????? That the registering IS A BAD IDEA. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN??????? Install so many restrictions and rules that everyone quits using this forum?????? So many rules and restrictions just to give a few tea-parlour country-clubber types a nice cozy feeling when the sign on???

PackardV12,

The forum's new policy of registered postings only for one simple reason - anonymous posts were creating to much friction on the forum. The vote was "against" going registered posters only. However, as the administrator of this forum I had to make a hard decision to eliminate anonymous postings to get harmony back to this forum.

The truth is - since the new policy took affect the number of offensive posts have dropped to zero and the number of new registered users has gone from 60 a week to 130 a week. The only complaints I've gotten are related to the registration process, not that one is required to register.

As far as I'm concerned the change in policy has been a positive for the forum.

Peter

PackardV12, Didn't mean to upset you. I go to "who's online" everytime I go to the forum, to see who's on and also to see if any new posts are pending. Doesn't take much to entertain me, you see. I was just surprised to see the "score" evening up. Of course, you don't have to register to read the forum, which is fine, but what you don't realize is you miss many benefits of our forum's features, such as telling you which posts are old or new, saving you time in the process. You can also play with your buddies when they least expect it, like I did to Dave@Moon last week. I know some people miss the PHartman types, but I really think those guys were turning off propective users of our site. And, if you have noticed the "new registered people" lately, looks like a lot of new Buick guys are jumping on our bandwagon. Just my thoughts. Wayne Burgess
