A REALLY TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW

The Southern California Chapter of the Antique Studebaker Club held their first official meeting and car tour today (July 28) and it far surpassed even the most optimistic expectations.
Coming off a great tour in Ventura, organized by SoCal's Neil Shepard, the meeting turnout was stupendous! Lloyd Prather traveled down from Bakersfield for it, and Richard Dormois came in from Mesa, Az to be with us. Neil Shepard came down from Northridge - well, you get the picture. We met at Johnny Reb's restaurant in Long Beach, and as folks kept coming, we stretched out of the corner that they gave to us and spread out to adjoining tables and booths.
First order of business was elections. In an effort to be less political and more of a fun club, we dispensed with the traditional titles of 'President' and 'Vice-President' in in their place have substituted 'Dictator' and 'Commander'. The Board of Directors will be our 'Champions'.
Rick Peterson was elected our first 'Dictator', Len Roman our Secretary/Treasurer, Tom Markey and Bill Cannon, Historians, Lloyd Prather is Champion for the northern area, Ralph Baer for the LA Basin & Valleys, and we're still looking for a representative from the San Diego area. Yours truly was elected 'Commander' and editor.
Following the meeting we headed down to the neatest museum: a massive building filled with beasutifully restored cars, partially restored cars, mostly disassembled cars, cars that will never run again, parts, bits and piecees, accessories, and much more. Owners Howard and Mark Bennet were extremely hospitable. (Can you imagine any other museum that will allow you to climb into and sit in a Duesenberg racing car?) Our thanks to them.
From there to a new car dealer - but it used to be a Studebaker dealer from the 1920's into the '40's. The walls are lined with photographs of the place as it was seventy/eighty years ago. What a peek into history.
A really gret day, and it's going to be a tough act to follow. First Ventura, and now this! Wow!
Questions about joining? Contact Len Roman romanlj@yahoo.com or Neil Maken yesterdayonceagain@yahoo.com
Love to have you. Even if you don't live in SoCal.
Neil Maken, editor

Rick Peterson has asked me to post this picture of those who attended the first meeting of the Southern Calif. Chapter of the ASC. Now that we have a picture of those who attended, how about a picture of the CARS? grin.gif" border="0
socalmembers1.jpg
[ 07-31-2002: Message edited by: Mark Huston ]

Mark, and all -
We had a devil of a time getting as many people as we did into that photo. It was taken in front of the Long Beach Automotive Museum (owner Howard Bennett in the white shirt and blue shorts in center of photo). Folks were just so fascinated by this unususual museum that they didn't want to come outside for the photo.
And no, that's NOT everyone that attended; we had a head count of 27 people at the the meeting. Not bad for first time, eh?
You'll get plenty of photos of our cars in the near future as we get a bit more active as a Chapter.
Neil
