23 Buick- Should I Grease Steering Shaft?

Guest

Recommended Posts

I removed my steering wheel, the nut was only hand tight and there was some play. The shaft is steel, tapered and keyed. The wheel hub seems to be aluminum. When I replace the wheel, should I lightly grease the shaft so it won't freeze to the wheel? I've tried it and when I tighten up the nut I get no movement. I don't want to have to use a puller to remove the wheel but I also don't want to have the wheel loose in my hands while I'm driving down the road. Was I correct in greasing the shaft or have I screwed up?
------------------
Craig H
BCA #37372

I too would have greased it, but would have used a good anti-seize lub. Some greases can be corrosive or get really hard over time.
I would tourque down the wheel a bit, you wouldn't want it to break thru the key and go spinning just when you decided to make that turn.
John
