Guest
Why would anyone name their vehicle model "Dictator"? Was there ever a time that this reflected positively on the product?
Guest
Studebaker started it's "Leadership"campaign in '27 with the Commander,Dictator and President models which the executives believed carried good recognition and association in the public's mind, this was 6 years before Hitler put a negative spin onto the Dictator name, also before Franco in spain, while Mussolini had been around for a few years previously. Guest
the original meaning of dictator, in the Roman republic, was an individual given a temporary assignment as head of government in a crisis. After 6 months, the office expired, and his duty done, the dictator returned to private life. Q. Fabius Cuncator was dictator during the 2nd Punic War. So the original connotation was of service to the country in time of need.
