1. Some hoarders enjoy having something others want. A local hoarder bought three collectable cars back when they were just orphan used cars. He parked them and for forty years, his social life was fielding calls and visits from guys who wanted to buy one or all of them. The hoarder never had the money or the health to restore any of them, but he sure enjoyed teasing those who wanted to buy them. Even though he had no intention of selling, he'd dicker, talk, take offers and promise to think about it. When he passed away, his children sold all three cars before he was cold in the ground and for less money than he'd been offered numerous times. jack vines
2. I'll try to run it by my cam grinder; he sees more antique cams than most anyone in the country. He may have some insight. jack vines
3. Thanks for the replies. That's pretty much how I figured to go. We couldn't find a valve guide interchange, so we just manufactured a valve guide from three pieces from other engines. jack vines
4. Greetings, All, We usually built Studebaker and Packard V8s and the occasional Champion, but a 1927 Dictator Light Six has come in for a rebuild. Since this is outside our normal supply chain, we'd appreciate any engine parts supplier recommendations. jack vines Obsolete Engineering Division of Mager Engine
5. FWIW, I've owned both. The '55 is by far the better driver and less expensive to buy and own. However, you're like me and an old guy who can't take it with him. The '56 Golden Hawk is the ne plus ultra of the '50s Studes. It's fast, beautiful and fun. Go for the gusto. jack vines

11. This one will be available in about six weeks. Nothing but the best professional work: Block main bores align honed, decked, cylinders bored .040", new Egge pistons, diamond honed for moly rings Crankshaft and camshaft reground, rods resized New rod, main, cam bearings New valves, hard exhaust seats, positive seals Late design cam retainer plate and spacer, Oldsmobile oil pump conversion or redesigned Packard oil pump with vacuum pump. 12. Studebaker did have trouble with the early 232" steel cams. By now, most have been replaced by and iron cam. What is the part number cast or stamped on your cam? Your 232" most likely has 1.00" diameter lifters, which are NLA. Yours might be salvaged by regrinding. I have reground camshafts and lifters available on an exchange basis. PM me if interested.
13. The experts on another forum identified them as '54 359" intakes and exhausts. Now I have to go through the shelves and see if the eighth intake valve escaped to another box. jack vines
14. In a pallet of Packard V8 parts were this NOS set of non-V8 valves: 5.89" long, .3395" stem diameter intakes (only 7) 1.800" head diameter exhausts (set of 8) 1.435" head diameter The exhausts have a p/n S1813 stenciled on the head. From the Egge catalog, this p/n would be for: PACKARD 6 / 245 CI, 1947-1948 PACKARD, 8 / 288 CI, 1951-1954 PACKARD 8 / 327 CI, 1951-1954 PACKARD, 8 / 359 CI, 1954 For whatever reason, Egge doesn't offer intake valves, so I can't get any info there and there's no identification mark whatever on the intakes. Does anyone know for sure what I've got here? jack vines
15. I have a '52 327" 4-bbl which can be available as a core or completely rebuilt to your specifications. jack vines
16. Yes, the horsepower gain is real, but few Caribbean owners then or now ever used the high-RPM horsepower. I don't recall this. Usually, whether Carter/Rochester or Autolite/Delco, like displacement and compression engines had the same horsepower ratings. Can you cite some source for the claim?jack vines

18. Hi, Mike, Kindly note, I haven't as yet placed a for sale ad. My first post was: "Are these 1922-23 Dodge wheels?" and "Any estimates as to value?" I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone might have as to where, other than this site and www.dodgebrothersclub.org, I might go to research what wheels like these typically sell for. I've gotten two welcome but unsolicited offers so far.As to the kind words, I was just passing along what one of the Dodge Brothers here had volunteered and noting how similar it was to what we see/hear over on the SDC site. thanks for your patience jack vines
19. Hi, Mike, I went to quite a bit of effort to rescue these wheels from becoming yard art, just so I could pass them along to some Dodge lover who needs them, albiet at a fair price. Thus far, I haven't been able to determine what is fair market value. A bit OT, but I'm a Studebaker-Packard guy and it is interesting I have gotten some of the same advice from here as that I've gotten on the Studebaker Driver's Club site. The recommendations from some of your own here were basically, "Put the wheels on eBay; the old Dodge guys here are cheap SOBs and won't pay for parts." Over on the SDC site, we have an acronym, CASO, which stands for Cheap-Assed Studebaker Owner. Guess we all see it the same everywhere: "I am thrifty, you are cheap, he is a miser." Bottom line - I don't like eBay and would prefer to deal directly as soon as I get enough feedback to determine a fair price. jack vines
20. Just for the sake of determining the value of my wood spoke rear wheels, what are some of the prices out there for used wheels and rebuilt wheels? jack vines
21. I've been told these are from a 1922 or 1923 Dodge Bros. They are 32" x 4" and amazingly, the tubes will still take air. The wood appears to be in very good condition. It could probably be refinished and used. Any estimates as to the value of the two rear wheels? thnx, jack vines
22. I've been told these were from a 1922 or 1923 Dodge Brothers truck. They are 32" x 4" and the tubes will still take air. Any estimates as to value? jack vines

25. Hi, Rich, Anyone still building race engines at your age isn't too lazy. Since I've got the P/V clearance, I'm going to hold out for roller rockers in 1.72 ratio. I've got two sources who say they can make them, but I may just try it myself. thnx, jack vines
