THE STEERING WHEEL IS THE ALL MOULDED BLACK, IT CAN BE REPAIRED IF YOU THINK I MIGHT NOT BE INTERESTED. DROP ME A LINE IF YOU HAVE ANY LEADS. REGARDS DAVE

  5. HI TODD C, YES I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON HIS LIFE FOR ABOUT 6 YRS NOW. I JUST RECIEVED 12 PAGES FAXED TO ME OUT OF A HISTORY BOOK OF PONTIAC CAR CO. I HAVEN'T READ THEM YET BUT HE READ THRU THEM BRIEFLY BEFORE FAXING THEM TO SEE IF THAT WAS WHAT I WAS AFTER. ITS A GOLD MINE OF INFO. GEORGE H HANNUM WAS PRES. 1920 - 1923. A BRIEF SUMMERY OF WHAT I REMEMBER FROM MY TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WAS THAT SLOAN OR HANNUM DID NOT GET ALONG WITH ONE ANOTHER. SOON AS I READ ALL 12 PAGES I CAN SHARE ANY INFO WITH THOSE INTERESTED. HOW EVER I DO KNOW THAT WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MAN IS NOT IN THESE 12 PAGES. IT HAPPENS AFTER HE LEAVES THE OAKLAND MOTOR CAR CO. NONE OF THIS INFO COULD I FIND ON ANY SEARCH GOOGLE OR OTHERWISE.
  6. HI HARRY, IT SEEMS THAT YOU HAVE QUITE AN AUDIENCE OF DIFFERENT IDEAS. I SPEAK FROM THE SERVICE END OF THE STORY. WHEN THE PUMPS FAIL OR THE LEAK JUST WON'T STOP I'M THE GUY THAT HAS TO FIX IT. I'VE HAD MANY A PUMP TORN DOWN, WHAT I FIND IN THE PACKING GLAND WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. TRUST ME WHEN I SAY A PACKING GLAND NEEDS TO DRIP.I SEE GRAPHITE AND TEFLON ALL THE TIME, YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT IT DOES TO A BRONZE SHAFT. SO USE A STAINLESS SHAFT I HEAR. YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT IT DOES TO A STAINLESS SHAFT AS WELL, JUST AS BAD AS BRONZE. THE SIZE OF PACKING IS DETERMINED BY THE SHAFT SIZE AS WELL AS THE SIZE OF THE PACKING NUT. THE PACKING IS WRAPPED AROUND THE SHAFT ONE FULL REVOLUTION, AS IT MEETS ITSELF YOU MAKE A DIAGONAL CUT ACROSS BOTH PIECES FORMING A MITER CUT ON EA. THAT WILL THEN CREATE A PERFECT JOINT. THIS IS DONE AGAIN STAGGERING THE NEXT JOINT ON TOP OF THE PREVIOUS LAYER. THE NUMBER OF LAYERS IS DETERMINED BY THE SIZE OF THE PACKING GLAND. I HAVE NOT HEARD OF THE MATERIAL YOU HAVE MENTIONED.
  7. HARRY, TEFLON AND GRAPHITE WORKS GREAT ON SHAFTS THAT TURN BACK AND FORTH AS IN A SILCOCK OR FAUCET. HOW EVER WHEN THE SHAFT SPINS VERY FAST THESE PRODUCTS GALL IN A REALITIVELY SHORT TIME. IN MY BUSINESS WATER PUMP PACKINGS AND OTHER HIGH SPEED PACKINGS ARE DELT WITH EVERY DAY. I HAVE ALSO APPLIED THIS TO THE CAR BUFFS WALKING IN ASKING THE SAME QUESTION. A HIGH SPEED SHAFT IS GOING TO GENERATE ALOT OF HEAT AND FRICTION, THE JOINT SHOULD DRIP EVER SO SLIGHTLY TO HELP COOL AND LUBRICATE. THE REMAINING LUBRICATE COMES FROM THE PACKING WHICH IS A TIGHTLY WOVEN FABRIC IMPREGINATED WITH WAX. AVAIL IN DIFFERENT SIZES. THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM IS OVER TIGHTENING, WHICH WILL BURN THE PACKING UP AND GALL THE SHAFT.
  8. HELLO, NEVER PATCH A ROTTEN PIECE OF WOOD WHEN YOU CAN HAVE A NEW ONE MADE FROM A GUY LIKE ME. STEAM BENT BOWS ARE UNDER A LOT OF STRESS. NEW WOOD IS BEST. DROP ME A LINE IF INTERESTED. REGARDS DAVE
