1. PackardV8 , you may have put me on the right track here. There is a smell of gasoline , and yes I have suspected the float level. I wonder how or where to find the float bowl vent ? Also , after an emergency braking , the engine dies and is very difficult to start. Could you put in a quick word about adjusting or inspecting the fuel level in the float bowl ? I have complete forgotten how to do this. Thanks for your positive help sofar! The electric aspect has been checked. The car runs consistent the whole day. I did a modification in the leads to the contactbreakers though. Those were too closely fitted to the breakers them selves.

hot idle ?

I am driving a 1948 standard sedan 288 Packard. All is fine excep... After two hrs drive the idling gets rough , the engine does not stall ,but starts to swing to the extent that you feel the car body shaking.I have twiddled the two mixture screws on the carbs , but no luck. Also , I tried changing the basic idling speed. I do not know in what direction to go from here. In cold , the engine starts fine and the fast idle works with a smooth transition to slow idle. Ignition timing is checked, the engine does not over heat. So , what is left to me ? Gerben Wassenaar , Netherlands

Last of the Wood?

My 48 and 49 22 series had wood for attaching the headliner.
4. Please allow a foreigner to ask a stupid question . What exactly is a rocker panel ? I would like to understand this thread better, since I have a similar basket case Packard 1949 with no floor or "sills" . Where are the rockers?
5. I drive a packard 48 . When I had bias ply tires , trouble started in the cold. In summer time they became quite smooth. My contention : because of the synthetic fibres used for the carcass these tires have memory action. They develope flat spots when at rest.At the end my flat spots did not go away any more. Presumebly because I did not put enough heat in them.So , I swapped them.
6. in the " godfather 2 " , there is a flash forward scene of a parking lot.In it there a Packard 48-50 and a 53 standing together. This scene is at the beginning of the movie.
7. As Randy Probably knows, the PAC site has an thread on this. It was collected over the last years. Also in the glossy "Cormorant" magazine of PAC there was a special about the three speed manual gear shift. I forgot which one but people out there could know.
8. Because no one said it yet I will. When new to a Packard do not hesitate and obtain the works manual. In it you will find the method of testing your sender unit. I think that even in a dismantled state of the car you should be able to jury rig a circuit with the level gauge on the dash.
9. When a certain speed is reached and cannot be surpassed , clearly it looks like "fuel starvation".A way of checking this is to drive the car in second gear and see what gives.Probably you drive at higher engine speed , but if the maximum attainable speed is the same as in top gear , that represents all the power the engine is willing to give. If so ,a simple check with your accelerator pump will give some result. If by pumping no extra power is obtained, try connecting a separate cannister temporarily to your carb fuel inlet, and so bypassing a lot of risky fuel lines, but also check the small fuel filter in the carb. Just my thoughts, Gerben Wassenaar, Netherlands.
10. For what it is worth: in the movie "the rock" , half hour from start there appears to come into the scene a dismantled Packard 48/49 in a greyish color. Can any ony out there confirm ?
11. O.K. thanks for the reply. In the mean time I did a cold starting attempt, which did succeed.I just started the engine some six times ,then it ran .The trick seams to be that it waqnts a lot of petrol in the inlet manifold. By using the accelerator pump and during turning the engine keeping the throttle wide open I got it done, no dirty hands. By the way I am still interested in playing around with different inlet manifolds. Does the 327 manifold fit a 288 ? Gerben Wasseaar
12. Hello, I reply to your post because I am also interested in a multi carb setup on a straight 288 engine.Should you know more about edmunds manifolds , please let me know. As relates to your cold start problem, I suffer from flooding the engine in the cold state. My choke valve operates nicely, but I think it closes too much . After four times starting, i.e. turning the ngine with ignition on, I smell petrol coming out of the exhaust pipe. I then open the choke valve against its spring and remove the air filter pipe. Then the engine starts at once. I tell you this because you too may have a similar problem. The crude way to find out what is what is to pour petrol directly in the carburator and start.Keep in mind the check on petrol fumes , though. 13. for what it is worth : I remember a movie with June Allison driven a 1948 convertible in a green color. I cannot recall the name of the movie and would certainly like to know it
14. Hello Leon, just logged in and read your story about the shear pin in your oil pump.
I have had this happening to me twice now on my 288 '48 engine.I have replaced the shear pin and also replaced the pump by a some what more loose feeling older pump. The experts at the time at PAC could not give an explanation for breaking. It was thought that a very cold start might give too much resistence and overload the shear pin.
wassenaar,Netherlands
