1926 Buick Master - Running Gear, Engine, and Transmission
Fred Rawling replied to Centurion's topic in Buick - Buy/Sell
Look at the rear hubs. If it has 6 acorn nuts it is a master, If it has 12 bolt heads it is a standard -

The oil filler asked about is the same from 1927 to 1930 all series. 1927 is cast iron, the later are aluminum. Painted, you can not see the difference.

I had a rope seal from something in the 1940's or 50's. It was about 3/8 oval shape. It fit in the groove and only stuck out a little. I pushed it in ja bit with a screwdriver handle and bolted it together. Maybe I was lucky to the the right rope packing.

for sale - parts 1924 Buick Master Series Lever Arm Shocks
Fred Rawling replied to Mark Shaw's topic in Buick - Buy/Sell
I am almost positive8that I have a set of shocks for a 1928 Standard, 116 in. WB. The front shocks have a strap from the arm down to the axle. It fastens to the axle with a clamp that I do not have. I forgot how the rear shocks fasten to the axle. When the rain stops, I can take photos of my 28 Master to show you. If you are interested in the 4 shocks for the 1928 standard for $20.00 plus postage, I will look for them amd send you photos after Christas.. Fred -
Tuneup settings timing, point gap, RPM circa 1928
Fred Rawling replied to 28Buick's topic in Buick - Pre War
A couple of things to think about: In the Mar/April 1972 issue of Antique Auto, David Chambers wrote an article about 6 Cyl, Buicks. He cited a study by AC Spark Plug which showed that a spark plug gap of 0.040 was best. I drove the 1928 Master over 9,000 miles including 150 mile trips on the freeway and was happy with that setting. Regarding blocking off the heat pipe to the carburetor. I did that and was not getting as good performance. I opened it up again and removed the butterfly from the exhaust manifold valve. I felt that it ran better. A side benefit is this: If the exhaust manifold valve is frozen and anyone pushes on the dash heat lever, an original heat plate can break. With the butterfly out of the valve, you can leave the linkage to the valve connected and disconnect the rod to the heat control lever behind the dash. Adjusting the carburetor which everybody wants to mess with first and is the least likely to be the problem. Use a vacuum gauge. I found that it is smarter than I am.. -

I find a lot of stuff at Ace Hardware. There is an Ace industrial Hardware in Torrance, Ca. that has a huge selection of bolts and screws. The other places are McMcaster Carr and McFadden Dale on line. -
Buick 1927 delco 640a 1928 distributor needed UK
Fred Rawling replied to chris earl uk's topic in Buick - Pre War
1930 Ser. 50 & 60 were dual points. I just saw a 1929 generator on the shed in my shed that has the distributor in it. (fits 1926 and 1927). If you need one contact me. If you have the original distributor that is frozen frozen in the generator of a 26 or 27 generator, providing it is just frozen and not yet broken, I cut it out of the generator end plate. Generators are cheaper than distributors. -
They look like rear wheel hubs from 1926 to 1928 Buick Master. The defining feature is the contour of the neck from the flange to the threads. I have never been able to remove the bearings and I doubt you will be able to do it. You have to find a machine shop to do it. Fortunately the seem to never wear out.

Tricks on Measuring Manifold Vacuum - 1940's Straight Eight
Fred Rawling replied to JimH56's topic in Buick - Pre War
For the best correct reading, you should take the vacuum below the throttle plate. The wiper will work but you will not get the most corrrect reading.
