    Synthetic Oil Question

Are there any synthetic oils that have zddp so you don’t have to mix a bottle of it into the oil?
  2. I can’t believe it... there are as many scam robots on this site as craigslist. I put a post in the Parts Wanted page on here and I have gotten 3 messages saying they have what I am looking for and to text them. I’m not texting somebody that I haven’t talked to so I message them back and they don’t respond. I looked at their profiles and they had all signed up a day or two ago. Is there a way to report members you suspect as being robots? When you try to look more in depth at their profile, luckily, my internet explorer won’t let me continue because of “too many pop up pages.” I never thought on this site we would be experiencing scammers.

    RTVing intake and head gaskets

I was always taught that you do not use any sealer on the head gasket or the intake gaskets. Due to them being metal they crush into the imperfect surface and create a good seal. But I was just watching a restoration show and they were using sealant on those gaskets. Whats the right answer?
  4. This is my first time replacing a pressed seal so I’m looking for some guide lines and tips. It is the pinion seal at the front of the rear axle on my 51 Meadowbrook. When I went under I saw oil sprayed in a straight light around the front of the axle. I called Andy Bernbaum since I’m going there Monday to pick some stuff up and they said it was the front seal. Is there an easy way to take it out? How about any lubricants/sealers for installation? I’ve never taken apart an axle, am I in for any surprises? I’m also going to replace the differential gasket as that leaks too. What’s the best way to clean the differential once I have it open?

    Rebuilding 1951 Dodge

The car pulls to the right even when the brakes are not applied so I’m sure it needs an alignment. I’ve been driving it for the past 5 years. I haven’t tried to clean the oil breather yet but I think I did when I first got it on the road. It’s probably due for a cleaning again. I suspect that I have a leak from the valve cover that’s under the intake. I can’t see it very well because it’s directly under the intake manifold. I stuck my phone down there and blindly took this picture.

    Rebuilding 1951 Dodge

I have straightened out the brakes and overheating. Well, the brakes hold pressure and don’t drag although I do need an alignment because it always pulls to the right. As for the consumption.. I can’t say it’s always because this was the first time but I have driven about 150 miles and put in 4 quarts of oil.... Whenever I travel about 50 for more than a mile or so I lose oil like crazy. When I decelerate it smokes. Could increasing the viscosity oil help that? I have been using a 30 weight lately. As far as I know the engine has never been rebuilt. It isles like a dream and it drives without problem. I figured I would bring this up and get some advice from more knowledgeable people so I don’t hurt the engine. This car has been my baby for 5 years. Before me the car hadn’t been on the road since 1973 and the owner before me wanted to rat rod it. I like it as a stock car that I can take the family out and about in.

Water Pump Plugged in My 49 Dodge Coronet

Based on the looks of the distribution tube it is probably rusted through so that would possibly need to be replaced. I’m not sure if the engine runs for any length of time but in my ‘51 Meadowbrook I powerwashed as much of the rust out of the block as I could, replaced the water pump, and flushed the radiator forward and backwards then put water in the radiator and a tub of wood bleach. There’s a lot of discussion about wood bleach on here. My car constantly overheated so I put the bleach in and ran the car for about 5 hours total over the next couple of days. Then I flushed it and repeated the problem. Now my car doesn’t overheat. I’m not sure about the mechanics of the wood bleach and correct me if I’m wrong but it seems to eat the rust.

    1952 Hydra-Matic Shifting

I broke the control valve panel on my ‘52 Cadillac. I took the one off my parts car, same year, model, and transmission, and adjusted the bands. The car wouldn’t shift out of 1st gear. So I took it back out and cleaned it. Everything moved perfectly and smoothly. Now it shifts from 1st to 2nd, but I can’t get it to shift to third. I’ve tried to adjust the T.V. rod according to the book and it didn’t help. I loosened the T.V. rod nuts so it didn’t create any pressure and that didn’t work. Am I missing something that I can adjust? I see nothing in the shop manual that talks about this. Any advice would be helpful. And yes I know that many people say to rebuild them whenever they have the slightest problem but I’d like to try to fix this in car before sending it out to someone. Thanks!

    Hydra-Matic won't shift

In my ‘52 Cadillac, Hydra-Matic, I have a problem getting it to shift. The fact is it won’t shift. I just replaced the valve body because the old one had a bent T.V. shaft. When I tried to take it out I snapped the front cover. After I put it in it wouldn't shift anymore; prior to replacing it it would shift 1-4. I was suspicious that it may have been dirty after I installed it even though it appeared very clean so I took it apart and cleaned it. When I took it apart and found that the T.V. couldn’t go in all the way because the piston inside was stuck. I fixed that piston and everything moves freely as it should. There is no dirt or sludge inside it. The bands were also just adjusted. I took it apart again and cleaned the governor and blew air into all the holes under the control body. But I can’t get it to shift into second. I get up to 15-20mph and the governor won’t let it go faster and it doesn’t shift. I’ve driven it with the T.V. rod connected and disconnected and still the same situation. Before I changed the control panel it didn’t have a T.V. rod and shifted 1-4. I don’t know what else to try and really don’t want to have to take the transmission out and rebuild it just yet. It reverses fine and takes off without slipping. I know that everyone on here likes the idea of rebuilding, and I do as well but I am on a fixed budget right now and can't afford to rebuild it and I don't really have the space to do in my garage. What exactly does rebuilding the transmission do that isolating the problem and repairing that specific item won't do, besides remove any chance of an item inside being broken? I appreciate any help. And please don’t say the transmission is trashed like I have seen in every transmission thread I’ve read. Thanks!

    Hydra-Matic won't shift

I worked on the transmission and got it to shift to 2nd gear but it wouldn’t shift to 3rd or 4th. So I took the control valve body back out and found the 3-2 Detent Plug stuck. I fixed that and now it won’t shift out of 1st again. Do either of those books talk about that?

Not to take from Bob’s thread but I put the control panel back in and it shifts to second. But I can’t get it to shift to third of fourth.

    Hydra-Matic won’t shift

I cleaned the control valve body and now it shifts to second gear. Will not shift to third gear though. I'm assuming that is linkage that has to be adjusted. I can feel it clearly shift into second gear.

    Hydramatic repair

All he told me was that I have to rebuild it. Standard answer when people don’t know what the solution to the problem is. I took the control valve body back off and soaked it in a degreaser then put it back together. The pistons seem to move much easier. I haven’t gotten it back into the car yet. I’ve hit that point where I’m running out of solutions so I’m delaying trying another for fear that it won’t work. But I feel confident that this will help. I’ll get it back in within the next day or two.

That seems like a very helpful book. It says more in those pictures than the shop manual does.

Poci, you aren’t talking about Willie are you? The guy that said your transmission was crap? He won’t help with advise.
  19. “Hey honey, lets go for a ride,” I said to my wife. I had finally goten my ‘51 Meadowbrook to not overheat and to travel at highway speeds for at least short distances without a problem. So I wanted to show her how it drove. She didn’t bring her phone or purse and we headed out. We drove 20 minutes with no problem so I got on the highway. We are driving and everything is good until I hear this strange ticking in the engine bay and the headlights dimmed. I looked at the gauges and the temp was pegged past hot and the battery was discharging. So we pulled off the highway to a convenience store and I got out. The belt had separated and fallen off. I put it back on and we started the 20 minute drive home. It was 9:05pm so no stores were open for a new belt. So we got half a mile and the battery started discharging again and the temp pegged. We pulled over and the belt had ripped more. So I tried a shoe lace since I had nothing in the car. That got another 1/10 mile. I tried some wire I had in the trunk. Another 1/10 mile. So I drove about 5 minutes and shut it off. Luckily these Dodge engines are so strong and it kept full power. If I didn’t have the gauges I wouldn’t have known there was a problem by how it was acting. Long story short, a little over an hour and several stops later we got home. Not my proudest moment driving the car but I’m still very impressed with how it handled. But it definitely speaks for having spare parts in the trunk.

This is why you should have spare parts

Yours has better looking hubcaps. I bought mine from a guy and his wife in farm country. They had planned to rat rod it. Unfortunately the passenger side windshield cracked when I was replacing the weatherstripping but it had the last inspection sticker, NJ 1973. Had to replace a stuck valve and it fired right up.

    Hydra-Matic Adjustment

I found this online from a transmission website. The writer says that he spent 12 with General Motors as an engineer. It says that this is how to adjust a GM 1946-63 Hydramatic (Standard and Dual-Range). Does this make sense? The Cadillac Shop Manual says to set the engine to 700rpm in D-4 and loosen the front band until the engine revs to 900-1000 then tighten until it stays at 700rpm, then tighten 6.5 turns. Then tighten the rear band in the same way then put it in neutral and tighten 2 turns. This is what the website says: Band adjustment for dual range: Front = 1/3@ Reverse = 1/3@ @ Loosen band adjustment all the way. Start engine. Shift the manual lever to low. Tighten band adjustment until it stops. Turn engine off (it will loosen with engine off). Count the number of turns it takes to re-tighten and back off 1/3 that number of turns.

    Hydra-Matic won’t shift

I cleaned the filter and the sludge from the bottom of the pan. I have cleaned the control body and the governor. I have blown out all the lines under the control body. What else can I do? Everyone on these forums loves the idea of rebuilding everything but what would that actually do? What makes that different from isolating the problem and repairing the specific item?

    Hydra-Matic Adjustment

I do. It’s out of a ‘52 Cadillac. I had agreed with poci1957 because mine does the same thing as his.

    Hydra-Matic Adjustment

So I tried that method of adjusting and tightened the band and it kept tightening to where I didn’t have enough threads left to put the locking nut and it could have tightened more. What does that mean? If I adjust it the way the book says I have plenty of threads still left to lock it with the nut.
