  1. Wayne Sheldon has referred to early auto dealerships which attached plates to the vehicles they sold, sometimes with serial numbers. The Van Automobile Company of St Louis, Missouri was one such company. The Van Automobile Company was organized in 1905 for the manufacture of automobiles but there is no evidence of any Van automobile having been built by this company. By 1907 and possibly earlier the company was an auto dealership. The photo below shows a painted brass nameplate produced by Van which shows their address in St Louis and gives a serial number. As an example of a dealership emblem which was made to be displayed on the car radiator, see the attached photo of a very rare example of a beautifully made enamel finished emblem that was specially made by the Cadillac dealership, possibly in the 1930's. There are some other examples on display in the emblem collection at the Swigart Auto Museum.
  2. Sorry for my late entry in the Dealership Emblem discussion, I only just noticed it. I attach some photos below. The first is a Bergen dealership emblem. This emblem also has no obvious fixing on the back. It is found in several different colors and sometimes wrongly included in auto makers emblem collections. The next is a Harry Newman Special. This emblem has a threaded screw fixing. Harry Newman had a big Ford dealership but the "Special" in the emblem suggests it may have been used on a radiator but I cannot confirm this. The Lasky emblem has already been mentioned and is listed as an auto manufacturer in 1916 in some references but there is no evidence to date to confirm this. The Lasky Motor Car Corporation claimed its inception from 1907 and by the early 1920's was based in Brooklyn and had become one of the largest authorized Ford dealerships in the area concerned with Ford commercial and passenger vehicles. The Lasky Motor Car Corporation also offered a full auto repair and maintenance service and was still operating as a Ford dealership through the 1950's. The emblem is found in blue and white or black and white enamel. I have seen it with no fixings on the back and some with a threaded screw. Interestingly, there are some other, larger Lasky Motor Car Corporation emblems, which are curved to fit a radiator, see photos attached. I believe they must have been attached to the radiator top but I have no idea what vehicles. Does anyone know more about these Lasky emblems?
  3. Terry, you asked if I knew about a Gale logo or emblem. I have never seen a Gale emblem and I doubt there was one, apart from the possibility of a decal on the side. I also can't help with a logo, maybe someone has a brochure that shows one. I attach a photo of a brass script for a Gale. Mike
  4. Terry I like your pins. Great collection! Your Briscoe emblem appeared about 1917 and may have continued to 1921 but I am still looking for confirmation of these dates. Regarding the dog bone-shaped Briscoe emblems shown earlier, my Chandler example was not a good one, because, as you noticed, the ends are curved. Anyway, here are two more Chandler radiator emblems, which much better show the similarity with the Briscoe emblems. If anyone can help to give the dates of use of the Briscoe dog bone-shaped emblems, I would be most grateful.
  5. I am researching the use of emblems on early American motor vehicles and I am seeking help to identify the dates of use of some unusual Briscoe emblems. I attach photos of two dog bone-shaped Briscoe emblems. They are both original emblems and one is part of an emblem collection known to have been put together in the 1930's and maybe earlier. These Briscoe radiator emblems are identical in shape and size to several emblems made for the Chandler motor car and I attach a photo of a Chandler emblem from 1922 for comparison. There are very many different Chandler emblems of this shape. Chandler cars were made betwen 1914 and 1927. Briscoe cars were made between 1914 and 1921 but I can find no evidence of any link between Chandler and Briscoe. If you have an information that would help to put dates of use on the two Briscoe emblems, I would be most grateful.
  6. Hi Terry Yes, I have your email, thanks. I finally worked out how to get connected. Mike Hi Greg Do you know anyone from the Ontario area who might be interested and knowledgeable about Canadian emblems? I am very keen to talk with someone. Mike
  7. Hi Folks Sorry to come in late to this conversation but for those who were interested to see anoriginal Howard emblem, I attach photos of the only two Howard emblems from my son's collection. The one on eBay recently was certainly a repro. Incidentally, I am having a lot of trouble getting help with some Canadian emblems to go on my website (www.americanautoemblems.com). Is there anyone here from Canada who might offer to help? If so please email me and I will be in touch (murraysbadges@gmail.com).
  8. Have you seen this emblem on a 1908 Matheson Silent Six or on a photo?
