I want to buy a camshaft and lifters for my 1956 Oldsmobile 88 sedan. How can I know the engine number so I can get the right camshaft ? Is it a 303 324 371 394 ?
Is there a place that sells good price camshafts for my car ?
Thanks![]()

hi, the 303 was used from 1949 to 1953, the 324 from 1954 to 1956, the 371 from 1957 to 1960, and the 394 from 1959 to 1964, charles coker, 1953 pontiac tech advisor.
If you have the original engine, then its a 324. Do the valve covers say" Oldsmobile Rocket"? Pictures are helpful if you have any. Seems that I recall that in 1956,the camshafts tended to be soft...I replaced one in my own car. Cheap is not likely. Sources are "fusick" and "egge engine parts". I can't endorse Kanter auto parts....but they are there also. Probably a camshaft on ebay also. Get lifters also, part of the program.
Check and make sure but I believe 55 and 56 take a different cam, Higher lift on the 56.,,,Tedd
yes..sounds familiar.
