Clean the upper part of the air filter by soaking in kerosene. Swish it around then let it drip dry. Do not blow air thru it, this can create channels in the filter allowing dirt to go thru.

When it is dry pour a little 50 wt oil on the filter medium and put it on the car.

The base can be cleaned by pouring out the old oil. Then wipe out the muck with rags or cotton waste.

When it is clean fill to the line with 50wt motor oil. Put the top on and you are done.

The filter should be cleaned when the oil reservoir is filled with dirt, or let's say half filled. If you live in a temperate clime and drive on paved roads this may take several years.

The factory says cleaning may be necessary daily in extreme dusty conditions.

The main thing is that there is some oil in the bottom. The incoming air is directed downwards so any dirt or dust hits the oil and gets trapped. Then the air passes thru the filter medium where any remaining dust gets stuck to the oily fibres.
