Book Recommendations
Hello friends, I am seeking recommendations for books on the subject of prewar well made upper end cars both foreign and domestic. Cars like: Duesenburg, Peerless, Stuz, Hispano Suzia, Rolls, etc. I am looking books dealing more with these car makers, their history, and details of the cars themselves rather than picture books. I have always wanted to know more about this part of our history.
Many thanks,
David

Re: Book Recommendations
+1 on that book, Mr. Keiser31! Was my first hardcover on antique autos, a christmas gift around '76 or so. Still have it and remains a favorite. It shows up at swaps from time to time also, usually under $20 but with Amazon, ebay, etc. finding a copy should not be too difficult. Great balance of both photos and text; covers each make in enough detail to determine interest in researching further if you wish. Much better than the typical general antique and classic (small c - they usually don't get that definition right..) books.
Elsewhere I think in general forum I suggested the work of Menno Duerkson who wrote for Cars and Parts when it was primarilly a prewar focused magazine. I was lucky enough to recently find a partial compilation of his work "Great American Classics" that covers around 12 of the great series he did in C&P that would be exactly what you are looking for Dave. Staples such as Packard and Duesy are in there but also Kissel, Stutz, etc. - highly recomended. Few B&W pics, lots of info on the people and companies that made these great cars. Published around '81 I believe. I also understand there is a more complete collection that was printed as well. The book I am referencing is softbound and more or less like a novel sized book.
Lastly, if you want to go upmarket a bit, Kimes' "The Classic Era" is one to consider also. I have heard, (but not read yet) "Olympian Cars" is also a good book on the Classic era. The Kimes book is available through CCCA or I think at the ACD Museum online book store, if not Amazon or Barnes.

Re: Book Recommendations
Another winner in my opinion is the "Automobiles of the World" by Joseph H. Wherry. Aside from the photos of myself and my older brother as kids that I found in the book, it has some very good all around information in it. Notice the two kids with suspenders in the upper right of one the photos? That's my older brother and I. The photo was taken at the Greenfield Village in front of the Martha Mary Chapel. I actually remember that day. Oh, yeah...back to the book. It's a great book with loads of photos. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 68-57510.

Re: Book Recommendations
If you're really serious, buy a collection of Automobile Quarterly. Individual copies may not address the information you're looking for, but taken as a whole, it's a wonderful collection of information on cars, body builders, and the industry..........
