Solution found for broken 1984 Glove Box Door Latch Striker

I found a solution for the broken Glove Box Door Latch Striker on my 1984 Riviera. I suspect that this part is the same on all 1979 to 1985, but I am not sure.

When the plastic portion of this part broke, I had modified it and got it to work for a while, but it eventually broke again. I found a part on Ebay that looked like the same plastic part with a different metal portion of the striker assembly. I bought one and just got it.

Here is the link:

GM# 10054054 BUICK GLOVE BOX DOOR STRIKER 1982-1996 NOS : eBay Motors (item 200434164475 end time Mar-01-10 15:38:47 PST)

The plastic portion of the assembly is the same, I simply swapped the metal portion of the striker assembly from my old assembly to the plastic portion of the new assembly and it is as good as new. He has two more available.

I have not checked, but since this part number, 10054054, apparently is used all the way to 1996, perhaps some GM dealers might still have some available after these on Ebay are gone.

Re: Solution found for broken 1984 Glove Box Door Latch Striker

Great news, thanks for the source tip. I found out when I was working on getting the glove box door on my '84 to close easily that the problem was that the plastic latch assembly would flex and not let the latch itself engage the striker on the door. I found that a 9 volt battery was the exact size needed to wedge between the upper part of the latch assemby and the bottom of the dash board. I cut a small piece of wood the same size, wedged it in above the latch, and it worked great from then on by just pressing the door shut, no need to slam it. If you haven't broken yours yet, all you need to do is reinforce it so it doesn't flex. The flex isn't limited to the latch, the plastic part of the dash it bolts to also flexes. You need to make everything rigid. You'll need to remove the glove box liner in order to do this.

When I had the same problem with my '84 I just went to my nearest Buick dealer and ordered a new one - no worries about aged plastic going bad again.

Jim,

Does the new latch allow you to jsut press the door shut now, or do you need to give it a good ride to get it to latch?

Very easy press latches the door - if you slam it it pops back open.

I'm shocked they still carry that!

Re: Solution found for broken 1984 Glove Box Door Latch Striker

I went to a local GM dealer first. They looked up the part number for the striker assembly and found part number 25509727. They said that it was no longer available from GM. When a Google search failed to find one, I then tried Ebay. The one that I have looks like it will be good for at least another 26 years or so.
