Re: horn repair

I once saw an article in the Cadillac and LaSalle Club's publication, The Self Starter, that detailed refurbishment of the regular diaphram-type horns. As I recall it looked pretty simple. Mostly involved cleaning and rust removal from the diaphram itself so it could move freely agian. The worst part to me was that you had to reassemble the body with screws/bolts and nuts. There didn't appear to be any way to recreate the rivet fasteners. Oh well, better to have the horn working.

Ed, does the article you mention cover the trumpet and regular horns?

Re: horn repair

There is a guy in Hamburg NY who rebuilds horns. I talked to him once and he appears to be a pretty conscientious guy. He said that this repair is not simple and can easily be messed up. His cost is pretty high, but I'm sure his work is very good. I wanted a pretty simple repair that did not use the rivets that he makes and uses on his repairs. He would not do anything other than a perfect original type restoration saying that anything less would cheapen his reputation (a valid point I would suggest).

If you are interested, here is is lowdown:

12-volt GM horns rebuilt. Dennis Portka, 716-649-0921, NY.

Re: horn repair

Keith,

It covers only the trumpet horns. As stated, the repair uses small machine screws and nuts rather than rivets. IMHO, the main purpose of the article is to get them working again.

Re: horn repair

Thanks for the information. Since I have seen information on standard horn repair, the link about the trumpet horns is something new that I may need some day. Mine still seem to be in full voice at this time but you never know. These sorts of articles are really valuable.
