Carb ID

I just picked up an all original '65 in need of a full restoration. The prior owner replaced the carb with a Barry Grant speed demon carb, but never finished the linkage so the car won't move. He was able to provide me with what he believed to be the original carb. It is a Rochester 4bbl. I would like to rebuild the original carb so I can move the car around while restoring it.

The only number I can find on the carb was a circular set of numbers between the body of the carb and the cast iron base. The numbers read 7019505. Could this be the original carb? I tried to compare to the numbers on the carburetorshop.com website (THE CARBURETOR SHOP / BUICK KITS 1965 - 1974) and the numbers don't match their list.

Thanks
Doug

Re: Carb ID

There should be a number on the lower left (as you look at it from the front) near the bolt hole that secures the carb to the manifold. As I recall, there should be four numbers (e.g., 3645).

Re: Carb ID

Patrick,

The numbers you're describing are for a Carter AFB.

The carb he was given is a Rochester 4GC. They were OE on a lot of nailheads back in the day. My '63 originally came with one but I changed it out for an AFB a couple of years after I got it. The base is separate from the body and they're prone to gasket leakage. The nice thing about the AFB is that there is no gaskets below the level of the top of the float.

The 4GC first came on the scene around 1953, and they were used on Buicks, Pontiacs, Cadillacs, and Oldsmobiles.

Re: Carb ID

Glad you are using our site for reference. The reason the number you have doesn't match the numbers in the list is that the number you have is a "casting" number, NOT the identification tag number. This link may help explain:

THE CARBURETOR SHOP / Carburetor Identification

And rebuilding the Rochester (if original) is a GREAT idea. It will definately outperform the aftermarket unit you have on your vehicle.

Jon.

Re: Carb ID

Yes, this is definately a Rochester 4GC. Unfortunately, the metal tag is long gone. In fact only 2 of the screws which held the top of the carb to the bowl remained.

I would like to rebuild this carb., but am having trouble identifying the correct rebuild kit.

Jon, my plan was to buy a kit from you. Is there some other method to identify the proper kit. If I am correct on this being the original carb. it appears your website indicates the same kit for both '65 Riviera 4GC options (lit #1799) - correct?

I have attached some pictures of the carb. In addition, I need 11 replacement screws like the one pictured as the prior owner did not provide the others - can I get these from you as well

Thanks again
