When you look at the rubber strip in cross section from the side, there is a lip that goes forward.
Each ends goes beyond the metal lip that has the mounting holes in it by about 1/4 inch. As you can see in the photos, the last clip on each end extends beyond the end of the rubber a bit.
I recommend you punch the first hole more than enough from the end to get too much overhang, put in a few clips, and then go back and trim the rubber under the metal clip to leave the correct amount of overhang. Mount the rubber across the cowl until the last hole is punched and the last clip is in. Then trim that rubber piece back to correct length.
Use a leather punch to make the holes in the rubber.
