What is this Cadillac motor??

I'm a Buick person so please excuse my ignorance on Cadillacs but this beautiful 1936 Convertible Coupe currently on ebay has a motor which I don't recognise?

Cadillac:eBay Motors (item 200358588249 end time Jul-08-09 06:29:35 PDT)

The motor really looks like an inline flathead 8 to me, am I missing something? Did Cadillac offer a straight eight in 1936?

There only seems to be one photo of the motor although many other shots are included in the advertisement

Re: What is this Cadillac motor??

It's not a Cadillac Cadillac, it's a Cadillac Lasalle as it says. It was the companion car to Cadillac. Similar body (exactly the same sometimes) and this one came with an Oldsmobile engine (several years they came with a Cadillac engine). Eventually they figured out it wasn't bringing people up to this price range, it was stealing calls from Cadillac itself. Unlike Pontiac (the companion car) which replaced it's parent the LaSalle was dropped. Too bad really because it had some real great styling most years and was a very good auto.

Re: What is this Cadillac motor??

LaSalle used this Oldsmobile based engine in 1934, 1935, and 1936, reverting back to a Cadillac V8 in 1937.

Re: What is this Cadillac motor??

This Cad LaSalle thing will never die. THERE IS NO SUCH THING!!!!!!!!!! It is a LaSalle, period. Just as there are no Ford Edsels or Ford Mercurys (except the early prototypes). Same with Rolls-Bentleys. Never made 'em.
