About 15 years ago someone wrote an article in one of my club magazines (The "6-Pack" Triumph TR6 Club) on the use of Eagle One Wheel Cleaner to remove stubborn carbon and sludge residue when prepping small engine parts. I looked the stuff up in the store and found out that one of the main active ingredients in it was hydrofluoric acid (HF).
If your outdoors washing a car wheel without touching the material (as per the instructions) that wouldn't be a problem, but scrubbing a small car part inside a garage would give the restorer a pretty intense exposure to this stuff. The bad part wasn't the (very) acidic nature of HF,
the problem is that HF is a very serious nerve toxin that does permenant damage to exposed nerves! People could have lost feeling and function if they incautiously followed the advice in that article.
I informed the editor immediately, and the club magazine printed a warning headline in the next issue. The internet didn't exist then (at least for most people), and it took 3 months to get this out to the members.
When people start fretting over the personal and political sniping that goes on here, try and remember the important function this forum serves. It's items like this that make this thing truly important!
