Pines Winterfront
Are there any experts out there on the applications of Pines Winterfront radiator shutters? I found one in my father's barn, but it's very different from the one on my Marmon. I've attached a couple of pictures.
It's about 34" x 14", and operates manually by way of two small knobs used to open and close the shutters. Were these made "to order" for specific vehicles, or did car owners buy the closest fit they could find and make it work?
Dad said this one reminded him of a '38 Plymouth.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Pines Winterfront
They made hundreds of models to fit each make and year of car.
Possibly one size would fit several years, for example on a Model T. But each one was made for a specific car.
Dealers would order the right one to fit your car.

Thanks, Rusty, for the information. I appreciate it!

Re: Pines Winterfront
Rusty is correct about the many Pines Winterfronts for the many models of cars out there. I have one for a 1925-1928 Peerless which would not fit a '24 or a '29. Some of the more expensive Peerless models included a winterfront with purchase, and sometimes you had to buy one as an accessory. In my case, I bought a winterfront first, then bought a Peerless to go with it!
Does the Winterfront for your Marmon have an emblem near the top with the Marmon logo? Mine has a very nice metal disk with the Peerless logo. I bought it from one of the Hemmings Motor News editors, who found it in a discard bin at the end of the 2007 Hershey Swap Meet.

Re: Pines Winterfront
This looks like the grille shape for maybe 1936 era cars with the tall, somewhat narrow "waterfall" type grilles. In fact, it looks like it might fit a 1936 Chevrolet. I' ve seen some very similar, if not identical, labeled for a 36 Chevy on Ebay.

Re: Pines Winterfront
Jeff - There are no emblems on the Winterfront on my Marmon. I was REAL lucky with mine: it was in great shape - not a dent or ding on it - when I dragged the Marmon out of Dad's barn. That's where I found the OTHER Winterfront last weekend.
36chev - After looking at pictures, I think this Winterfront is too narrow for a '36 Chevy. My current guess is '37 Plymouth because of the cut-out at the top of the unit. It looks like that cut-out might line up with the hood ornament/mascot on a '37 Plymouth.
I'm going to keep doing my homework. Once I'm fairly sure what it fits, I'll try and sell it. I've been selling a bunch of Dad's stuff on eBay over the past few weeks - man, have I learned a lot! Plus, after spending the past 7-8 years restoring my Marmon, I really understand what it's like to find that missing part for your project. Not to mention that I'm making a few bucks for my 86-year-old father!
