New To the AACA

Hi, my name is Fermin ive been around old cars all my life and i have alot of respect for those who maintain them. I live in Winston Salem NC, i usually go to Pilot Mt and mocksville for the cruisins . I have a 1983 vw rabbit GTI i know is not a muscle car but its a start the car has beenrestored from the ground up and i converted it from CIS fuel injection to twin weber carbs, i do have some questions, i read somewhere that a car is considered an "antique" after 25 yrs is that the same here as far as the NC DMV? what are the advantages of registering a car as an "Antique"
Well thank you for the space on the tread.

Re: New To the AACA

Welcome to the AACA Discussion Forum.

Under North Carolina General Statute 20-79.4, an antique car must be 35 years old. Here is the text from the statute...

55) Historic Vehicle Owner. – Issuable for a motor vehicle that is at least 35 years old measured from the date of manufacture. The plate for an historic vehicle shall bear the word "Antique" unless the vehicle is a model year 1943 or older. The plate for a vehicle that is a model year 1943 or older shall bear the word "Antique" or the words "Horseless Carriage", at the option of the vehicle owner.

The benefit of the antique vehicle registration in North Carolina is that for a vehicle so registered, your county can only tax the vehicle at a maximum tax value of $500. The extra $10 fee for the antique plate saves me quite a bit on the property tax on my 1929 Model A Ford Phaeton.

Re: New To the AACA

For your second question (which you asked why I was typing my first answer)...

Vehicles 35 years old and older are also now exempt from the annual inspection in NC also.
