Re: Gorgi Classic

It's a Corgi toy, made in England, named after the Queen's favorite dog.

Think Tootsietoy, Dinky Toy, or for the younger crowd Matchbox.

The Corgi line was launched in 1956 as a competitor for Dinky . Made to the same scale as Dinky, but they had fancy features like clear plastic windows, interiors, spring suspension, wheels that steered, and chrome wheels.

They were very popular and sold in all toy stores here in Canada for years. I'm surprised you never heard of them, but maybe they were not sold in the US.

The 1912 Rolls limousine with roof rack for baggage, was modeled from an actual car. It sold for $2,970,000 at Pebble Beach.

Corgis were sold in the U.S., but usually only in hobby shops. They were quite expensive, usually around $10 when a Matchbox was 75 cents.

Re: Gorgi Classic

I had quite a few Corgi's when I was a kid and I remember them very fondly. My mom and dad were divorcing, so I got a lot of bribes! I had the Batboat, batbike, batmobile (shot projectiles out of back), 007 Mercedes (fiberoptics for head/tail lights), Green Hornet Lincoln, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (wings pulled out from under running boards), a cab over twin boom wrecker (all winches and booms worked!, cabover with 2 level automobile transport trailer and there were others too. Man I miss them and ea one had some special feature. High quality and very detailed. Even as a 7 yr old, I only played with them indoors, kept the boxes, never had any demo derbys with them (hotwheels were for that!).

When I moved to Venezuela as a 17yr old, I gave them to a 12 yr old nephew with specific instructions about care and feeding. I knew they had increasing value. When I came back, I saw the Batmobile squished in the street and poor Chitty buried in the sandbox. I thought he would understand, but boys will be boys and they didn't survive. I have looked for many of them since but vintage ones as I had are too spendy now.

Re: Gorgi Classic

Here in Canada there were Corgi displays in Kmart, hardware stores etc in the sixties and seventies. Prices from 79 cents for small cars like a Mini, to $1.89 for typical cars, up to $2 $3 or $4 for real elaborate ones like the Bond Aston Martin, Thunderbirds car ( a wild custom from an English science fiction cartoon show) big buses and the like.

The 1912 Rolls Royce probably sold for around $1.50-$2 when it first came out.

Arrow Re: Gorgi Classic

The only Corgi I ever got new was an Austin taxi with a little plastic traffic cop on a rotating stand. I remember it was discounted to $6 and change ($6.35 I think, but don't hold me to it) at Loreski's hobby shop in the Monroeville Miracle Mile Shopping Center (suburban Pittsburgh). I still have it (sans tires), but the cop is long gone.

Re: Gorgi Classic

I have the original issue batmobile with the batboat, lost the trailer many years ago but found a trailer and the missing robin figure on ebay so its now complete. Got a couple of the VW beatles froma safari set,one I had since new but repainted it red to look like the 65 my mom had years ago when I restored it and picked up a original from a antique mall. When I was in kindergarten I got the mercedes limo with the working windshiel wipers and took it to show and tell so I found a couple on ebay,I have a few dinkys too and other brands too.

Re: Gorgi Classic

My parents were too cheap to buy me the larger 1:43 scale Corgis. However, Corgi did have a line of Matchbox sized cars, and I did have several of those. The big Corgis were nice, but the little ones were cheaper in price and quality than Matchbox. They also had gift sets with the same car in both large and small size in the same package.
