6-Volt Inverter Suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

My Dad owns a 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan. He takes it to shows but wants to plug in his boom box/CD player for the drive. He says he needs a 6 volt power inverter that can plug into the lighter.

Can someone please send me some links of online stores that carry these?

Thanks for any help

I bought one of this
6 8 12 Volt Positive to Negative Ground Radio Converter:eBay Motors (item 230395097929 end time Nov-12-09 15:42:17 PST)

it has worked well on the Model A and on my 55 thunderbird.

Re: 6-Volt Inverter Suggestions?

Hi Jay, Thanks for the reply. I'd actually prefer a cigarette plugin version that would have an outlet on the end for him to use with other devices as well. Have any ideas for something like that? Thanks

As the boom box is not grounded to the car, you should not need an adapter. Simply reverse the wires on the plug.

Incidentally, you can use any portable radio or CD player in your 6 volt car, by wiring the 6 volts to the battery wires. Nominally a 9 volt, it will work fine on 6. In case anyone wonders what we are talking about.

Thanks Rusty, I'm not very mechanically inclined so I'd prefer to give him something he can simply plug into the cigarette lighter and unplug when done..anything available like that?

That is how I have mine hooked up I bought a cheap 3 way lighter adapter, and put the plug at one end to plug in to the 6 volt Pos ground and hooked the 3 outlets to the other side to give me three 12 volt positive ground outlets.
I use a GPS as well as a Strobe for night driving with the model A.

Yes there is. Take an ordinary cigarette lighter plug. Take the wires off. Put the wires back on with the + where the - used to be, and the - where the + used to be. Voila, you now have a positive ground plug to plug in your boom box.

Paint the plug a bright color and put a big label on so you can't mix it up with a standard plug.

That would work fine if he had a 12 positive ground car but at 1949 Lincoln is 6 volt positive ground so that will not work. He needs the adapter.

Re: 6-Volt Inverter Suggestions?

A boom box, CD player or radio that will work on 9 volts of batteries, will work on a 6 volt car battery. They typically take 6 1 1/2 volt D cells.

Think about it. They may have 9 volts to start with but as the batteries wear out the voltage drops. They make them to run on as low as 4 or 5 volts before the batteries die. A 6 volt car actually has nearly 8 volts when the generator is charging.

I'm not sure I would try one on 12 volts. It might be too much.

All you need is a cigarette lighter plug wired to the battery connection.
