Straight 8 Valve Adjustment?

Hi, Gang. What size wrenches will I need to do a valve adjustment on my 1939 Buick? Does it matter if the engine in question is small or large series? Thanks for any help. John

Re: Straight 8 Valve Adjustment?

Hi, John
My 50 takes a 9/16 box end. I believe that is what yours will take. That and a good straight bit screwdriver. I just did mine. I slowed the idle as slow as I could. Still have to "chase" the slot in the adjusting screw. Have fun.

I did mine by running the engine until hot, then shutdown. Quickly remove the valve cover and follow the shop manual. rotate the engine so that the distributor rotor points to # 1 cylinder and from this point you can adjust the valve lash for 4 of the cylinders. Then rotate engine to point to another cylinder (it's in the shop manual) to adjust the last 4. If you want to you can start it up, let it run for a few minutes and check them while it's running. A little loose is better than too tight.
