Need help. 1930 buick trans.

Hi all,

I was backing the car off the trailer with the engine removed and the trans when into gear!
The car is halfway off the trailer.
Any suggestions how to get it out of gear?

Sleepless in New Tripoli.

You need to get the pressure off the transmission. If you can lift the rear off the ground, and then try to rock the wheels back and forth, it should come out of gear, Paul

With engine removed, should be no pressure on trans. Or am I missing something?

I would suspect that the transmission is worn enough that it's in two gears at the same time. If you're in reverse on one shift slide and 2nd on the other slide, the internals of the transmission will lock the car up solidly.

"There is wisdom in the counsel of many."

Thanks all for your advice. I jacked up the rear wheels and used a pry bar to move the throwout bearing yoke forward alittle bit. The the trans was immediately freed and the car rolled into the garage!

Thanks

Dwight

Dear Dwight:
See my post about being in two gears at once. BE SURE to check that transmission very carefully, because if that 2 gears at once thing happens while the engine's running or the car's moving, you'll have a major transmission failure! Not what you need!!

Re: Need help. 1930 buick trans.

Dave,
Concerning the two gears at once. Perhaps my choice of the word "locked" was misleading. Before I got the trans out of gear today, when we pushed it backwards the trans turned as we pushed the car backwards, just like it was in reverse. It would not allow us to pull it forward, back onto the trailer. My assessment was that it was in reverse. I think if it was in two gears the trans would not move at all. Do I understand this properly?
If my thinking is incorrrect (not a new thing for me) how would I check to make sure it is not in two gears?

Dwight
