    1931 Buick Series ID

My son in law is beginning restoration on a 1931 Buick. All paperwork says series 80, however he has found where someone has penciled series 90. It is a two door convertible with a rumble seat, and has a 344 flathead. How do we correctly ID this beast, and what info/resources would anyone reccommend for research?

    Thanks in advance.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming...

    Wooo, What a ride!

You should be able to find the model number on the plate on the firewall. If still not sure, you could post a few photos, and others may be able to help. If it really a "flathead", it is not a Buick engine. All Buicks are Overhaed valve and '31 always a sraight 8.

Also, the 80 series came only in a Coupe and Sedan - no open top. Some info is on the Judging rules on this site, but you should consider joining the BCA and getting the book - The Buick - A Complete History. The info above comes from that book.

If a 90 series, it would be Model 94, and a rather rare car, with only 824 being built.

Good luck with the car, and keep posting with questions and requests for information.

    Dear Saminy:
If you post the frame, engine and body plate info, we can decode it for you. The engine number will be on the right side of the engine, usually near the distributor. The frame number will be on a small plate, probably near the right front fender. One or the other of these was probably also used as the VIN number on your title.
