The honeycomb cores have very small passages for water flow. Very small pieces of rust and crud can blocks them. just running flush through the cooling system does not correct this type of blockage. On My 32 I took the radiator out and set up a back flush with the radiator upside down. after flushing for about 8 hours using hot water and radiator flush, I got about 1/4 cup of particles out of the flush water. The particles almost looked like sand.
These open unpressurized systems with who knows what type of antifreeze has been used, build up a lot of sludge in the engine cooling around the cylinders. It is difficult to get flush to break this down and carry it out of the engine. Again, I would recommend a back flush to move solids to the lower radiator hose rather than have them dumped into the top of the radiator where they will block the passages.

Thanks for the information Bob. I might not have asked the question right. I'm doing this to swap out the coolant more then to actually clean the crud out of the engine as it was rebuilt recently.
Thanks

Bob,
Check out my CLR flush thread. It can't hurt.
