Re: Mudbone's 55 Century off to the media blaster!!

Just a quick question for my curiousity........was the underside of your 1955 Buick factory painted black or was it your decision to go that color? I saw a 1954 Skylark (from Illinois) painted a red oxide primer color that was supposedly the way it rolled off the assembly line. Thanks.

Re: Mudbone's 55 Century off to the media blaster!!

The underbody had a thin black coating with many areas sprayed with black rust-proofing. Some areas looked like they missed it altogether. The rear fenderwells had some body color overspray on them but not a lot. As you know when your doing a complete restoration you end up over restoring the car. If I wanted it as the factory did it I would have missed some areas as they did. My goal is to preserve the car the best that I can and still remain original as possible. This car was from Denver so I lucked out on the floor pan. I added some pictures. Mudbone

Has any of the other valve train parts been replaced? Did they set the valve depth to factory specs? If you have new valves are the height set correctly? As Buicks do not have any way to adjust the valves everything must be close to specs or things will be out of wack. I would get to book out and check everything. I hope this will help. Mudbone

Hey Mudbone,

I'm several weeks away from having to worry about it but what did you use for primer?

Did you use a wash treatment before or an etching primer?

Just curious on how you treated the bare metal after the blaster since I will be doing the same.

Last time I was doing paint work there were three types of primer:

Red Oxide
Red Oxide
and Red Oxide

Where did you get the media blasting done? Would you recommend their work?

Thanks Ken,

Got the email. I was researching this allot and was leaning toward the products you are using.

It's always good to have a direct recomendation though.

Thanks for the help. I'll probably hit you up again when I get a bit closer to doing mine. It's been a long time since I've held a spray gun.

Re: Mudbone's 55 Century off to the media blaster!!

I had it done in Maple park Il. They did the work on the Model T I did 9 years ago. I don't know if I would use them again as this is a side job for them. I took six weeks for him to respond to my phone calls. He charged me $1000.00 for the job and I had to go over all the tight areas again that he missed. Ken
