Re: 68 GS350 & 98 Riviera

Well, good luck with your project. If you are successful, I'd be interested in what types of modifications you made.

Also may I ask about the bottom half of your dashboard? My 69 seems to have a matte finish, while your's looks glossy. I like yours better than mine but would you know if it should be one or the other? My car is a relatively low milage car that was used at one point by a heavy smoker, so I don't know if mine is just damaged paint or not.

Thanks

Re: 68 GS350 & 98 Riviera

John, the 68 and 69 cars did in fact have cosmetic and functional differences in the dash/instrument panel area. I'd bet your lower dash area is correct for a 69. The 68 is similar to an argent silver in appearance. Mine is showing it's years though, so I'm not sure just how close to factory it currently would be. I'm not real familiar with the appearance of a 69 dash, but do know you have a black speedo area, while the 68 is white. My climate controls are thumb wheel style too, unlike yours. I also have the dash ignition instead of on the column.

Yes, I was aware of the difference in the guages etc. What I was refering to was the painted surface along the bottom of the dash, including the ashtray. Your's looks like a gloss black finish, mine seems to be a matte ( maybe satin, but not totally smooth) finish.

Re: 68 GS350 & 98 Riviera

Oops, my bad, thought you meant the lower instrument panel area. My lower dash is in fact a pretty glossy black. It appears to have been repainted, probably mid-90's about 3 owners before me, when a partial resto was done.

Re: 68 GS350 & 98 Riviera

Thanks for the follow up. I took a closer look at mine. The glovebox door is satin and smooth, the rest is a satin color but almost a prickley finish. I'm thinking I may try wet sanding it to see what happens.

David,

I have a 2.97 out of a GS sitting in the shop collecting dust. If you want it, its yours.
