    Stuck 1949 Roadmaster Dynaflow

    Say, I just hauled home a 1949 Roadmaster engine with the dynaflow still on it. The serial number on the engine is 55444207 and I can't get the transmission to come loose from the engine. I don't know anything about these transmissions and was wondering what I was doing wrong? It's loose from the bell housing and will turn and come back away from the engine about 1/4" or a little less, but won't go any further. Any ideas? Thanks now, Earl.     If anything like later Buicks with Dynaflow, there is a flex plate that attaches the torque converter to the crankshaft. Find the flexplate bolts and remove them. The transmission should come out then.

    There are three or four bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel. You'll see that they have a flattened area on the flywheel. Remove the bottom of the bell housing and turn the engine using a 1" socket on the crankshaft pulley, until each bolt comes into view. If your engine is stuck, then you really have a problem, because you have to remove the crankshaft with the transmission attached--not fun, but I have done it.

    That's good to know as I am going to remove the crankshaft anyway. I don't think the block is any good on this engine but someone may have a use for the transmission. I'll know better when I tear into it some more later today or tomorrow. Thanks now for the advice, it's hard to tell how long it would have taken me to figure it out on my own and the shop manual didn't really offer much advice on that one.
