    Paint Preparation question

    Hi folks,

I am from the Reatta forum and would like to ask a couple of restoration questions. I have a 90 coupe that was hit and run. Insurance is going to pay for the damaged area, but I am going to have a 3500.00 Dupont all over squirt done.

I will have this done by a good local shop. Will not stripping the paint. They will remove the handles, badges, and belt moldings. Not going to remove glass...guestion >>>Is there any preferred restoration method or special materials/tape that is used to tape off the wind/rear glasses or in other words are there any improved methods of isolating the weathersrtipping/glasses before painting that will not leave an apparent tape line?

The weatherstripping (this is a bonded to glass type of situation)is in a semi deteriorated state and before I take it to the shop I am going to sand/smooth it out. Several months after the main squirt I will tape off with light pressure tape and recoat the weatherstripping with a SEM waterborne coating.

Any other ideas/refined methods that I should be aware of. The last time I did (or had done) any real paint work was 20 some years ago and I know there is a ton of new methods/materials/technology out there.

    Thanks,

    Nic

    Re: Paint Preparation question

I am currently taking my second paint class at McPherson College, in their auto restoration program.
Taping off and masking the glass and trim is one area that technology has not changed. It is all in how carefully you lay down the edge of the tape.
