    center cap question

    Hi,

New member here, please excuse the naive question - what is the difference between the early 70's Buick road wheel tri-shield center caps that have the black medallion background and the white medallion background? It seems that 90% of the ones I see have the black background. Were the white background caps specific to a particular year, or model thus less common?

    Thanks

ps - I tried a search prior to posting and came up empty.

    Re: center cap question

I believe that the white/silver background caps are 1971, the caps with the black background are 1972 to 1976, these are for the 14" Skylark chrome sport rims.

    Re: center cap question

    Thanks for the reply.

The reason I asked is I recently aquired a 1977 Buick Regal S/R with the factory code N98 chrome wheels (15"). The caps on these wheels have the white background. I'm searching for some replacements/upgades. Three of the caps are in poor condition, one is excellent (must have been a replacement not too long ago). 90% of what I've seen available has the black background.

I also aquired a 1977 Buick dealer showroom booklet that includes many color photos, and the center caps on the Regal, Century, and Skylark models with chrome wheels in this booklet have the tri-shield logo with the white background. The "full size" models in this booklet have the Buick Motor Division caps.

I also believe the chrome bezel for my car's center caps are slightly different than say the early 70's Skylark because they are slightly wider at the base (against the wheel) than at the top (at the medallion).

Does anyone know if I'm on the right track here?

    Thanks again.

Check the Bugle. One of the members advertises center caps reproductions for sale. He wrote an article for the Buble a while back. It seems that he knows quite a bit about the subject. Perhaps he can help you.
