56 322 Nailhead Stroke

Is the 322 Nailhead a long or short stroke motor?

so in common terms would that be considered a short stroke or long stroke? I am not good with the numbers.

Re: 56 322 Nailhead Stroke

Since the stroke length is less than the bore diameter I would say it's a short stroke..........

In some circles this is also referred to as over square. An engine with equal bore and stroke would be square. With bore larger than stroke is over square and with bore smaller than stroke is under square. The advantage of over square is that in cylinders of equal volume the piston speed of the over square is slower.

Not looking to argue but just wondering : In an oversquare engine, if the stroke is short, how can the piston speed be slower?

Re: 56 322 Nailhead Stroke

I was wondering the same thing. Then I thought, at a given RPM, the shorter the stroke the less distance the piston has to travel in a given time. Hence a slower speed in surface feet per second. At least that's how I figured it but I could be wrong.........Bob
