There is a lip type rear main seal available now for 322/364 engines. Supposedly it can be installed without removing the crank. Anyone have any experiance with it?.........Bob.

Yeah, I tried that and after hours of work it leaked 3 quarts of oil in 20 miles...good way to rust-proof the frame. If you can't pull the engine to do it right check the main bearing tolerances, replace if needed and install a new rope in the cap.

The upper half of the seal can be tightened up while you have the lower half off. We used to take heater control cable wire and push two pieces up behind the rope seal. You can make a tool to do this by taking a piece of brake line about a foot long and fitting a piece of welding rod in side of it. I think I used a 1/8th inch rod. Weld something on one end of the rod to push on and have at it. American Motors used this as a warranty repair and I have used it on rope seals of all brands. Cheap, quick, easy, and it works! What more do you need?
