1959 Rambler engine color

Can anyone tell me the correct color of paint for a 1959 Rambler 6 cylinder OHV engine with 2 barrel carb?

I tried a search but found nothing.

Re: 1959 Rambler engine color

Many hours searching turned up hundreds of AMC sites and vendors. I am astonished that none of them have the paint colors for this engine. I found lists of paint colors for every other AMC engine from 1955 up but not the 1956-61 OHV 6.

The best guess I can make from the available info is that this engine was painted the same gray as the L head engine, with a Rampart Red valve cover.

Can anyone confirm this, and tell me what colors I can pick up at the local parts store that match these fairly close?

One site said Ford engine red was close to Rampart red, is this true?

Rusty,
Probably the most obvious place to check this out would be the AMC club listed elsewhere on this site.

Re: 1959 Rambler engine color

I already checked out 3 AMC club web sites plus 4 or 5 vendor sites some forums and about a hundred sites all told.

I found out the correct colors for every engine American Motors made from 1941 to the end of production. Except the 1956 to 1961 OHV 6.

One or 2 state that the valve cover is Rampart red with no mention of the rest of the engine. But they say the flathead engine is gray. That is why I assume gray and red was the color scheme.

Now another Rambler owner says it was black and red.

It doesn't matter, after all that my friend painted his 59 Rambler engine Ford blue because he happened to have a can of blue paint lying around.

So, the hell with him. Let him figure out his own problems from now on.

Who's gonna argue with the color he chooses if nobody can prove otherwise?

Re: 1959 Rambler engine color

Guess the horse is already out of the barn, but the 196 cid OHV six in my '61 American is "machinery grey" ( block, oil pan, head) with a red valve cover. Starter & genny are black.

The OHV 196 is an adaptation of the L-head six, so the grey is probably the same for both,

They look like "standard" colors to me.

Probably "old Ford red" and Chevy Stovebolt grey would come REAL close.
