    1950/51 Desoto Vin number

    How do I decifer the numbers from a 1950/51 desoto custom convertible? I want to work out exactly what year the car is
    the number is 501972** I have left the last 2 digits blank for obvious reasons. Any help appreciated

    Looks like from the number given, you have a 1951 Custom DeSoto.

    You're welcome and just to inform...the 1950 had a different look than the '51s. It looked more like a '49. The '51s on the other hand looked more like the '52s and '53s.

    To help identify at a glance... the 49 was an all new model very different from a 48. The 49 looked the same as a 50 except for minor trim differences, look at the center of the grille.

    The 51 had the 49-50 body with a "new look" ahead of the windshield, and longer rear fenders. The 52 was like a 51, but with a different hood having a chrome scoop.

    The 53 and 54 were all new, they looked a lot like the 52 but notice the way the rear fender blends into the body, and an overall more integrated look.

    The 1949 DeSoto, model S-13, got a new body shared by Dodge and Chrysler. It had vertical parking lights, taillights like small fins and the brake lights were either side of the license plate.

    For 1950, model S-14, the grille had a centre divider and the parking lights were round. The rear window was enlarged, with the trim piece along the lower edge of the rear window just above belt line trim. The rear fenders were new with taillights mounted on the rear edge of the fender. The brake lights were now combined with the tailiights.

    1951 models, model S-15, received a wider windshield and a new front clip, just as in the illustration for the convertible. The hood was more rounded at the front and the fenders higher at the A pillar and swept into the door that, if continued, ended around the door handle. 1949-50 fenders led into the door lock.

    At the rear end the 1951 models had the rear window enlarged so they now wrapped around the sides slightly and the belt line trim did double duty as the bottom trim piece for the window. Rear fenders and trunk lid were unchanged from 1950.

    For 1952, still model S-15, the taillights now had the the backup lights in the lower portion of enlarged tailight housings. At the front, there were two styles of hood.

    When the 1952 DeSoto models were first introduced only the DeLuxe and Custom were available. These first 1952 models had "DeSoto" in block letters instead of the 1951's script, a hood ornament like the 1951, and smaller, more vertical emblem on the hood.

    When the Firedome, model S-17, went into production, the non-Firedome models adopted its hood with a wider hood emblem and a hood scoop instead of an ornament. In Canada the change occurred at 99408702, meaning 301 1952 Custom models were built with Hernando on the hood and not the scoop.

    1953 DeSotos received a restyled body, shared with Chrysler but not Dodge, with a one-piece windshield, three-piece rear window, low roof line, rear doors with a reverse curve around the vent window, front fender line that continued to the rear of the car, and longer rear fenders more integrated into the body with a longer trunk lid. Wagons and LWB models received the new windshield. All models had a revised front clip with a grille similar to the 1951-52 version.
