48 New Yorker goes for a ride
Hello Chrysler people,
This past week the family went on vacation without me (by choice) but I had intentions of visiting for a day or so. There were thirty people in one house on the oceanfront at milepost 11.5 in Nags Head NC, I didn't need that for a week. So Monday I changed the oil checked fluids and pulled out Tuesday Morning around 11:00, made it down there in nine hours at 445 miles on the tripometer. The car was not happy in traffic around VA Beach and I had to keep it above an idle at stops or it appeared to vapor lock although the engine temp rarely went above 165 degrees. I enjoyed the ocean and my Grandsons that evening and Wednesday and decide about 11:00 PM would be a good departure time. The car ran good coming home in the cooler air, I was in my own bed by 7:30 AM Thursday. I got a little better than 14 MPG with the straight 8. I only have three photos, one crossing the causeway onto the outer banks, one of the car at the house, and going down the Mansion House Hill into Jim Thorpe at 7:02 Thursday morning a total of 890 miles. You forget you are driving an old car and wonder why everyone is looking at you, I had cars start to pass and then they would just ride beside me until I looked over and waved.

Taking the 48 for that length of a trip must have been a great feeling!
I have a 48 NY also, but have done a complete drive train makeover and will be looking forward to making some long trips like that in the very near future.

Re: 48 New Yorker goes for a ride
In August, 1978, about a month after the paint dried on my Royal Cpe, I drove 14 hrs from CA to Seattle, with a dog & HH goods... went through Drain, Oregon where it was 104 deg,. and the car stayed right on 165 deg.. My conclusion, these are certainly driveable collector cars. Now I'm starting over on my coupe that had been in storage far too long.
