Anti Lock Brake Problem

Changed the fluid, Replaced the accumulator..now the Anti Lock light is on, the pedal has an unusual feel to it.
Before we started the pedal was low but it had a very good feel, (it only moved about 1" to 1 1/2 " and stopped great.
Now the pedal is higher it moves about 4".. The first 1/2" free travel then brake action starts but for the next 1 1/2" it seems like it's working on only 2 wheels then the next 1" we are working all 4 wheels.
The pedal action is now soft. The car stops good.. Before the pedal had a very positive feel, did not move a lot and in that very short movement it had a good positive feel and would stopreal good
It now feel like air in the line and the Mechanic says there is none.. Comments please, Lou
Hey Hemi, are you there ?? What do you think ??

Re: Anti Lock Brake Problem

Lou,
Sounds like your mechanic might have bled the brakes using the wrong procedure. The Teves master cylinder will not allow any fluid flow to the rear brakes unless the pedal is pushed down a little bit. My former TC mechanic had a 'DOH!' moment when changing the fluid on my former 91 TC even though he had worked on the car since it was new. He tried to do the bleed by the normal machine assisted 1 man operation and couldn't get a pedal. When he remembered that the master cyl is electrically operated, instead of pushrod by foot operation, he got the pedal firmness back right away. The TC's brake pedal only operates an electrical switch that sends a signal to the master cyl and opens the valve to allow fluid flow to the rear wheels. Without pedal action that valve will remain closed and no fluid movement will occur.

Re: Anti Lock Brake Problem

As an old all systems mechanical type mechanic (the word technician was not invented) and considering everything points to a 2 system brake activation, I'm convinced it is a brake bleeding problem (like 1/2 has air) but it's very hard to convince this nice, usually very smart young fellow of this. I think I'm getting close to saying "Just Bleed em again according to Front wheels Key OFF, Rear wheels Key ON, if it works it's free. If it don't work I'll Pay.. And he is trustworthy... Lou
