    1936 Dodge trim color

I know my 1936 Dodge was painted gunmetal poly and vermillion was used for the wheel trim but does anybody know what color the recessed groove in the stainless side trim would be? I have seen red on some and black on some. I want to try and make my car as "factory" correct as I can. Thanks

    Re: 1936 Dodge trim color

As far as I know, the trim (stainless) was not painted on any of the cars. There has been some evidence of a red paint used on the trim on pickup trucks but I have not been able to fully confirm that as factory.

I agree with 1936D2, there is no evidence that the trim was ever painted. I've had three cars and there is no indication of paint. I know some people take liberties to "fancy"up cars! I'm curious about the gray and vermillion paint scheme. I thought vermillion was only used with the maroon color,I would have thought they would have used the silver or cream contrast color! On my Avon Green wheels with silver contrast I've found that the entire wheel was silver with the green sprayed over!

    Re: 1936 Dodge trim color

According to information sent to me by the "Walter P. Chrysler Museum - Chrysler Historical Services", the color combination in 1936 for cars painted "Gunmetal Poly" (Ditzler #IM-1517) is with a "Casino Red" stripe and wheels of "Gunmetal Poly" and "Silver".
For cars painted "Avon Green", (#IM-1535 - #IM-1684 for cars after May-5-1936) the stripe color is "Whirlpool Green #2" and the wheels are "Whirlpool Green #2" and "Avon Green Poly".

    Re: 1936 Dodge trim color

Thanks guys for the info. I was completely wrong with my statement about the vermillion color. I have obtained the build info from Chrysler Historical, but there was no info on color combinations. My paint code is 804 (gunmetal poly) with a trim number of 292. Does this help at all? Thanks

#292 is the upholstery type called "Pile". Those codes are listed in the parts manuals. It is a taupe to tan colored mohair style fabric. Pretty common in the '36 Dodge.
You can verify your paint code and trim/wheel colors from info on the attached photo.

    Thank you 1936 D2,
This is exactly what I was looking for and I appreciate your help. Like I said in my first post, I want to keep this car as close to factory as I possibly can.

Thanks for the info 1936D2. I don't know when my car was built but it does stray from that color listing. Do you know what "Whirlpool Green" looks like as I have no references? I think I would prefer that over the silver! Do you know if different color combos could be special ordered by the customer or if there were any other color updates after May '36? It's good somebody takes the time to research all this "tech"stuff!

    Re: 1936 Dodge trim color

I was always told the pin striping colors and the off set colors (like "Silver" or "Crimson" or "Yacht Blue" or "Whirlpool Green") were some sort of common color and ALL the paint guys and shops knew what those were. Well, that doesn't help us much now unless you find some old decrepit ( ) paint guy that can help you out with what those mixes were. I am thinking they were just supplied colors by paint manufacturers. Ask for "Silver" and you got it, same every time.
As far as I know right now, there were no other color updates except the Special Spring & Summer Selections. In OTHER years (was it '35 or '37?) there were "West Coast Colors" but best I can see those were not offered for '36, just the "Spring Summer" stuff.
Also, as far as I heard, you could not get your own colors mixed and factory applied for Domestic '36 Dodge Cars. Only the listed colors. So if you had a Taxi company (like Yellow Cab Co) or such, you repainted at the dealer when the car(s) arrived. Canada was a bit different. They allowed special colors on the production line. I think even for one off colors. (They even offered black fenders with some color combinations). Trucks on the other hand (BOTH Canadian AND Domestic I think) could get almost any color you wanted from the factory assembly line.
So our Domestic cars - pick from the color charts. That's all you have!

    Re: 1936 Dodge trim color

I guess giving limited choices keeps the price down! All the colored literature I have shows the green cars with silver or cream accents(I know that these may not be accurate).I have one brochure that shows a golden convert.with green accents.Go figure! guess I'll just pick something that looks good, when the time comes! Thanks for the info!

    Re: 1936 Dodge trim color

Advertising "photos" really can't be trusted for color. My understanding, color ads were all originally from B&W art that was hand painted for color. In otherwords, none of the color ads are accurate. I would not accept them as "proof" of what a car's color combinations would be. Work off info from the paint charts. That's your best bet.
If your car is of the right manufacture date, maybe consider one of the "Spring & Summer" colors if you want something different but "provable". Best is to do your car in the colors listed from your build record card.

    Re: 1936 Dodge trim color

The way I see it, is that the paint will cost the same to buy and apply so why not buy and apply the original color that the car was shipped with from the factory. I know that my wife is not real crazy about green but if my build card had came back showing green, my car would be painted green. I just think it's best to keep the car the color the factory painted it. Just my opinion.
