model a stiff steering wheel wont spin back
i have a 31 slant window with following steering issue
The steering locks at any position but will come back if you turn the steering wheel.
All rods steering componenst have been disconnected and greased, disconnected drag link will let steering move when car is on jacks
when jack up at spindle top bearing will not move when on jack and spindle is hanging top bearing will turn and steering box seems free. this was done per les andrews book.
any suggestions why steering is stiff and when turn the wheel in car taking a turn the wheel will not spin back? any and all suggestions appreciated
to make a long story short the wheel is stiff in turning and if driving and make a trun right or left the wheel will stay in that position unless i pull it back it wont spin back on its own and if i didnt pull back i would go in circles.

Re: model a stiff steering wheel wont spin back
Did you check for king pin wear in the spindles. If it's excessive it may cause the splndles to bind at certain points. Jack up the front and rock the front drums back and forth. If the wear is excessive there will be a lot of slop in the spindle. The king pin bearings might be worn out too ,putting undue weight and friction on the spindle itself. I can suggest that the steering sector gears may be out of adjustment or so worn that they bind at the farthest position . It also might be that the balls on the idler arms are worn out of round which can also cause binding. Maybe your steering box is empty causing binding. It should be filled with a 600W or equivilent oil NOT GREASE! How long has it been since any maintanence was done!
