Calling all 1/4 mi. racers!!!!

It's been a year since I had my 72' 455 rebuilt, What's max rpm ? The valve train is all "Comp Cam" stuff...extreme energy cam...1600 to 5500 rpm power band, "magnum" roller tipped rocker arms, guide plates, push rods, anti pump-up lifters, H-11 tool steel dual valve springs, "Clevite 77" rod and main berings
The th-400 has a stage two B&M shift kit, and a "B&M holeshot" 2400 stall torque converter, rated for nitrous. I'm told that because of the huge main journals, the higher bering speed dictates max rpm to 5500. The rear gear is a posi, w/2.73s. I dont think the top speed rpm will exceed that 5500 limit, out the back door of the 1/4 mi.
What do you all think???
P.S. Im new, so HELLO!!!! ALL!!!!!!
Denis Kinsner/Mr. Goodtool

P.P.S. The factory tach "red line" tops at 7000rpm. ... very funny GM!

Check Dick Miller Racing @www.dickmillerracing.com - either he or Joe Mondello are the gurus of Olds racing engines . Is your gear really a 2.73 or is that a typo (3.73) ? I am running a 455 with Edelbrock heads, Torker manifold, and Edelbrock Performer carb with 3.08 gears and TH 400 and shift at 5500 -it seems like it wants to keep pulling past this point . I'm thinking my winter project will be a 3.73 posi and an Art Carr 200 4R overdrive transmission.

Re: Calling all 1/4 mi. racers!!!!

Dear docfrahm; The car has 2.73s in the rear end for sure. As a safety maintenance thing, the entire rear end was rebuilt. New berings, crush sleave, GEARS, and freshened up "posi unit".
I tried 3.73s, in the past, but ...third gear, just past the intersection???
I know it's the tranny that's geared for those tall gears..."M-40" TH-400, but rather than regearing it, I opted to go back to 2.73s, in the rear. I also installed new severe duty u-joints on the drive shaft. The old u-joints were the old factory installed one's, with doubtfull life left. Regards, Denis Kinsner

Dear docfrahm; I forgot to comment on your tranny choice, as a winter project. I think it's a good choice. "Art Carr"can custom taylor the gears for you to take full advantage of the 3.73s.
The overdrive will give you good fwy. driveability too! The extra powerband in overdrive, will help keep the engine rpm consistant, for better liveability and et's.
