73-77 console shifter disassembly?

Can anyone share with me the secret to safely remove the reverse lockout handle from the shifter lever in a 73-77 Cutlass console?
I want to get the console off and dye it.

Thanks!

Re: 73-77 console shifter disassembly?

I'm trying to remember how I did mine when I took the Hurst apart five years ago. Seems like after I unscrewed the knob, I took the shifter top plate off and turned it sideways to clear the detent lever, then once the shifter plate was removed the console lifted off right over the lever.

For whatever reason that seemed easier than trying to get the roll pin out of the lever and then aligning everything so it would go back in.

Wow, that seems like a lot of work. I've never had a problem just tapping out the roll pin. Once you do that the lever slides right off.
